New Issue of JHM Explores Health Equity, Workforce Strategies, EHR Use and More
Peggy D. Harris, FACHE, is driven to help others. As regional chief diversity officer at Atrium Health, she strives to help entire communities achieve health equity. “No one can do it all, but we can all do something,” she says in an interview in the September/October Journal of Healthcare Management.
In a feature article, Richard J. Pollack, president/CEO of the American Hospital Association, shares practices to support changes that are needed as traditional workforce development strategies become unsustainable.
Also in this issue are research articles, including one that strives to answer the question: “Does the EHR cause providers to compromise their values when delivering care?” New research from Kelley M. Skeff, MD, PhD, and colleagues finds that the short answer is yes, and he presents strategies to address the problem.
Other research articles in this issue explore:
- Assessing professional fulfillment and burnout among CEOs and other healthcare leaders in the United States.
- Monitoring length of stay of acute myocardial infarction patients with a time series analysis using statistical process control.
- The relationships between financial stress and the quality of outcomes in cardiovascular services.
- How organizational constraints are a major cause of moral distress in healthcare.

The Importance of Reflecting on Heritage
“Much of who we are today is influenced by our upbringing,” writes Marcos Pesquera, president-elect of the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives in a recent ACHE Blog post. “When I reflect on my values and what I consider a priority, I have to admit, it was ingrained in me since childhood,” he continues.
Pesquera, who is also chief diversity officer for CHRISTUS Health, Irving, Texas, penned the recent ACHE Blog post to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month, which began Sept. 15. In the post, he underscores how his Puerto Rican heritage and upbringing influenced his decision to pursue a career in healthcare. In his roles for CHRISTUS Health and NALHE, Pesquera says, “I want to continue to instill pride in all our young Latino leaders and remind everyone of our call to promote health and healing.”
