Transforming Maternal Healthcare
To close care gaps for pregnant patients in maternity health deserts, a good place to start is engaging the community, which was successful on the South Side of Chicago.
“Hospitals have an opportunity to drive transformative change in maternal health by layering diverse solutions within community-centered systems of care,” writes Sarosh Rana, MD, and Laura Markin in an ACHE blog post. Both at UChicago Medicine, Rana is professor of obstetrics and gynecology, section chief of maternal fetal medicine/chief obstetrical transformation officer, and Markin is executive director, Transformation and Strategy, Urban Health Initiative.
UChicago Medicine collaborated with Friend Health Center to start its journey toward creating a comprehensive, patient-centered and efficient system for maternal health, focused on four domains: high-risk specialty pregnancy care, ultrasound access, labor and delivery partnerships/transitions, and evidence-based supportive programs. The hospital focuses on inpatient support and connections to prenatal care, and the clinic emphasizes outpatient care and social determinants of health. Both prioritize timely treatment, shared accountability and open communication. The model employed by UChicago is adaptable beyond the city’s South Side.

The Value of Administrative Fellowships
Designed to bridge the gap between academic study and real-world practice, administrative fellowships offer invaluable experience for graduate students and early careerists. These fellowships provide hands-on experience in healthcare management, where students and aspiring leaders can apply their knowledge in a dynamic, professional environment while gaining critical skills and mentorship.
For the organizations hosting these fellowships, it’s a chance to shape the future of healthcare leadership and enhance their visibility within the industry. Organizations not only contribute to the development of emerging leaders but also showcase their commitment to innovation and excellence in healthcare management.
ACHE has a directory of over 100 fellowships being offered. Visit the Administrative Fellowships webpage for details about pursuing a fellowship or if your organization is considering hosting a fellow.
September/October Issue of JHM Released
The Sustaining Safety series in the Journal of Healthcare Management highlights a promising area of AI: its potential to help reduce the high cost of patient safety compliance and reporting. Chad VanDenBerg, FACHE, chief quality and patient safety officer, UC San Diego Health, explains how AI could enhance patient safety by providing near real-time alerts regarding potential issues, predicting adverse events and even preventing them from occurring. He advises healthcare administrators to leverage AI by pulling “deeper learning” from available data sources.
This issue’s interview features Burke Kline, DHA, FACHE, CEO, Jefferson Community Health & Life, Fairbury, Neb., who discusses how rural hospitals evaluate their service lines and coordinate with urban health centers. Kline explains how running a rural hospital differs significantly from other types of healthcare administration, the future of critical access hospitals, attracting and retaining staff, and more.
The research articles in this issue begin by exploring the relationships between forms of health system integration and hospital patient experience scores. Other papers investigate the use of dynamic capabilities to enhance performance improvement in hospitals and the evolution and financial impacts of service lines in rural hospitals. A final article looks at the association between organizational support, burnout and professional fulfillment among U.S. physicians during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic.
