Driving Physician Engagement Today for Aligned Leaders Tomorrow
With nearly 70% of U.S. physicians now employed by hospitals or corporations, according to a report released this summer, physician engagement has become even more vital for healthcare leaders. In a recent “Physician Leadership” column in Healthcare Executive, Carson F. Dye, FACHE, president/CEO, Exceptional Leadership LLC, and an ACHE faculty member and author, outlines eight elements for healthcare executives to consider when assessing how to engage physicians within their organizations. One such factor is rewards. “As more physicians seek employment within larger healthcare organizations, leaders would be wise to consider what kinds of rewards their physicians value. These can include acknowledgement for delivering great care or board commendations for their service line for delivering top-quality care,” Dye writes.
He delves into even more detail about how physician engagement is a strategic and tactical priority for healthcare leaders in his recently released book, Enhanced Physician Engagement, Volume 1: What Is It, Why You Need It and Where to Begin. The book’s companion volume, Enhanced Physician Engagement, Volume 2: Tools and Tactics for Success, provides a how-to guide for involving and inspiring physicians.
For those seeking even more insight into the various intricacies of identifying and developing physician leaders and ensuring optimum physician engagement, Dye is leading a Virtual Face-to-Face Course on this topic from Oct. 12 to Nov. 4. During this seminar, he will guide participants in investigating the unique challenges physicians face as they move into leadership and how to identify and develop potential leaders early in their clinical careers. He will also discuss practical suggestions on building physician engagement, construct tactics to help physician leaders gain skills, and outline various ways to enhance physician engagement through clinical integration and quality and safety programs. Register today to acquire the insight you need to drive physician engagement while earning up to 9 ACHE Face-to-Face Education credits.

Explore New Insights in the Journal of Healthcare Management
The pandemic has revealed many care gaps in our healthcare system, says Diane M. Howard, PhD, FACHE, chair of the Department of Health Systems Management at Rush University. In an interview published in the September/October issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management, she calls for better communication to help people access the care they need.
The new issue also features a study that found hospitals may not be fully prepared for the next pandemic or mass casualty crisis. Authors of the study offer a new preparedness tool to help providers determine their ability to respond to unexpected surges.
Also included in this issue are an article that explores how the Veterans Health Administration’s Innovators Network encourages risks, and a piece by Paul D. Kempinski, FACHE, president and CEO of Children’s Mercy Kansas City, in which he shares an inspiring reminder to stay connected to purpose.

CMS Releases Final 2022 Payment Rule, Requests Provider Feedback
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is expanding health coverage access nationwide in its recently released final rule on the 2022 Payment Notice. This rule is the third installment of the payment notice for 2022, following part one and part two of the final notice of benefit and payment parameters released earlier this year.
In the final rule, CMS is extending the annual open enrollment period and expanding the role of federally facilitated marketplace navigators to increase awareness of coverage options available through the marketplaces and help consumers find affordable coverage that meets their needs. More details on these and other components of the 2022 Payment Notice can be found in this fact sheet.
Unrelated to the final rule, CMS is conducting a survey to help improve its provider resources about the Medicare program and fee-for-service billing. The survey will remain open until the end of September. Responses are confidential and the survey should take about 10 minutes to complete.
