The Link Between COVID-19 and Sepsis Management
The annual human and financial toll of sepsis in the United States are significant with hospital costs at $27 billion and deaths exceeding 270,000 per year,1 associated with one-third of patients who die in a U.S. hospital have sepsis.2
World Sepsis Day is designated as September 13, 2020. But this year sepsis is not the only major disease with high mortality in the U.S.; the 2019 novel coronavirus has been declared a U.S. public health emergency by the Department of Health and Human Services in January 2020.3
COVID-19 has swept around the world, impacting millions while straining healthcare systems. The more we learn about this deadly virus, the more we find links between it and sepsis. A recent retrospective study of COVID-19 patients in China found that 100% who died had sepsis and 70% had septic shock.4 Risk factors associated with in-hospital deaths were analyzed and sepsis was the number one complication seen in COVID-19 non-survivors.4 Although we don’t have a cure for this virus, we are learning that the best COVID-19 practice includes good sepsis care.
“Because COVID-19 patients are at risk for sepsis, the use of timely, appropriate diagnostics are critical to ensure optimal patient management,” says Patrick Murray, PhD, BD Worldwide Director, Scientific Affairs, Diagnostic Systems.

Frontiers of Health Services Management: Focus on COVID-19
“With the COVID-19 pandemic changing assumptions in care delivery, Montefiore Health System has deployed many innovative strategies that exemplify creative destruction,” write authors Jeffrey B. Short and Adrin Mammen, FACHE, in “A Pandemic Application of Creative Destruction in Healthcare.” This feature, which shares insights on disruption and innovation at Montefiore Health System in the Bronx, is one of several healthcare leaders’ perspectives on the pandemic in the special fall 2020 issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management. Other features in this issue address restoration of patients’ trust, workforce resilience, care for older adults, supply chain management, lessons from Superstorm Sandy, rural hardships, and the supporting role of the U.S. military. They describe how various providers are responding to the coronavirus and navigating toward recovery, implementing changes and discovering innovations along the way.
This issue of Frontiers is available online to all ACHE members at ache.org/Journals. Articles in this issue are also available on ACHE’s COVID-19 Resource Center at ache.org/COVID.
