AI’s Evolving Role Elevates Care
AI adoption in healthcare is accelerating, and generative AI is forecast to transform the industry. “AI and physicians together can get at something that neither can do alone,” says Michael A. Pfeffer, MD, associate dean for Stanford Health Care and Stanford University School of Medicine.
In Healthcare Executive’s September/October cover story, “Intelligent Care: How AI Is Driving Healthcare Transformation,” Pfeffer and other executives discuss how AI can revolutionize the delivery of patient care, with diagnostic accuracy highlighted as a transformative shift. “It’s an essential tool—another set of eyes, really—to keep clinicians informed and provide a safety net to prevent harm,” notes John D. Halamka, Dierks president of Mayo Clinic Platform.
AI also can integrate comprehensive historical data with personal information and use it to forecast future trends and bridge the worker shortage gap, as well as help manage a patient’s health journey. However, these tools are only as good as the data used to train them, and successful AI deployment depends on strategic, principled action by healthcare leaders, including supporting teams with open, honest conversations that address concerns. “AI is the future and will continue to be the future,” says HIMSS’ Robert Havasay. “Not investing today is a strategic mistake.”
Systemness: A Top Priority for Healthcare Leaders
Health systems have been responding to today’s economic realities with intensified merger and acquisition activity in order to survive and thrive. Smaller, standalone providers struggling with thin margins have seen consolidation as a lifeline. Systemness embodies the desire to operate as a single, unified organization to achieve better results, aligning people, processes, technologies, and data across various facilities, workforces, and care settings.
A combined entity can use more leverage to negotiate higher reimbursement rates. Getting bigger has become better in the effort to support the resource-intensive requirements for today’s technology, cybersecurity and interoperability initiatives. New consolidated networks can benefit from shared technology platforms and spending. Thus, systemness has proven instrumental in expanding access to specialty care in smaller markets.
The Fall issue of Frontiers of Health Management Services features a systemness case study of UCI Health and its acquisition of four community hospitals. Doug Niedzwiecki, FACHE; Nate Shinagawa, FACHE; Sherwin Rosario; and Chad T. Lefteris, FACHE, present their guiding principles for integrating UCI Health’s new system: quality and access, people and culture, and financial performance. Their integration efforts include implementing a single EHR, consolidating hospital licenses and developing integrated service line strategies to transform UCI Health into a resilient, mission-driven system.
