‘PUTTING
PATIENTS FIRST: DESIGNING AND PRACTICING PATIENT-CENTERED
CARE’ NAMED ACHE'S BOOK OF THE YEAR
CHICAGO,
February 2, 2004—Susan
B. Frampton, Ph.D.; Laura Gilpin; and Patrick A. Charmel,
CHE, are the winners of the American College of Healthcare
Executives 2004 James A. Hamilton book of the year award for
Putting Patients First: Designing and Practicing Patient-Centered
Care.
The
award will be presented on March 2, 2004, at the Tuesday Hot
Topic Session #1 during the American College of Healthcare
Executives 47th Congress on Healthcare Management at the Hyatt
Regency Chicago.
The
award is given annually to the author(s) of a management or
healthcare book judged outstanding by ACHE's Book of the Year
Committee.
The
James A. Hamilton Award is underwritten by the Alumni Association
of the Graduate Program in Healthcare Administration of the
University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in honor of the late
James A. Hamilton, FACHE, the program's founder and course
director between 1946 and 1966, and ACHE's 1939-1940 Chairman.
As
an organization dedicated to improving healthcare from the
patient's perspective, Planetree developed a patient-centered
care model that can be used by any healthcare provider. Edited
by Frampton, Gilpin, and Charmel, Putting Patients First
chronicles the origins of the patient-centered care approach
and then describes Planetree's model from the perspective
of organizations that have implemented it. Using real-life
case examples and documented research, different contributors
present the nine elements of the Planetree model—including
patient and family education, nutrition, spirituality, and
the arts—and demonstrate the benefits of patient-centered
care. In the second half of the book, contributors build on
these foundational elements, addressing such issues as understanding
the business case for patient-centered care, obtaining medical
staff support, and recruiting and retaining nurses.
Frampton
is president of Derby, CT-based Planetree and a Member of
ACHE. Gilpin is director of the Planetree Alliance, a network
of hospitals that are affiliated with Planetree. Board certified
in healthcare management and an ACHE Diplomate, Charmel is
president and chief executive officer of Griffin Health Services
Corporation, Derby. This corporation is the parent organization
of Griffin Hospital, which became one of the first Planetree
affiliates to implement the Planetree model hospitalwide.
Putting Patients First is published by Jossey-Bass.
