CLARK
TO RECEIVE ACHE’S CONLEY AWARD
CHICAGO,
February 14, 2005—Peter A. Clark, S.J., Ph.D.,
has been named the winner of the American College of Healthcare
Executives 2005 Dean Conley Award for his article “Prejudice
and the Medical Profession,” published in the September/October
2003 issue of Health Progress.
The award
will be presented on March 16, 2005, at the Wednesday Hot
Topic Session #1 during the American College of Healthcare
Executives 48th Congress on Healthcare Management at the Hilton
Chicago.
Named
for ACHE’s executive director from 1942 to 1965, the
Dean Conley Award is granted annually by ACHE to recognize
contributions to healthcare management literature and to encourage
healthcare executives to write and publish articles. “Prejudice
and the Medical Profession” was selected by ACHE’s
Article of the Year Awards Committee.
In his article, Clark outlines a brief history of racism in
healthcare and identifies several situations that contributed
to minorities’ lack of trust of the medical establishment.
Clark then applies the three ethical principles of respect
for persons, beneficence/nonmaleficence, and justice to the
issue of racism in healthcare. He concludes that immediate
action is necessary to ensure that all Americans are receiving
equal care. Clark also identifies several steps to eliminate
racism in healthcare, including offering every citizen adequate
healthcare, increasing the number of minority doctors, using
evidence-based guidelines to determine treatment, ensuring
equity among organ transplant recipients, and addressing the
many myths and rumors that surround healthcare issues such
as HIV/AIDS and vaccinations.
Clark
is professor of Ethics for St. Joseph’s University and
bioethicist for Mercy Health System, both located in Philadelphia.
The
Article of the Year Awards Committee recommends two additional
articles: “Changing the Healthcare Culture: The Consumer
as Part of the System of Care,” by Julie Morath, R.N.,
from the Summer 2003 issue of Frontiers of Health Services
Management, and “Scrutiny of Not-for-Profit Community
Hospitals’ Exempt Status Targets Their Pricing/Collection
Practices, Charitable Purposes and Finances Resulting in Significant
Local, State and National Events That Now Challenge Hospital
Managements and Boards,” by James J. Unland, published
