MYERS,
PAULK, AND DUDLAK
TO RECEIVE ACHE'S CONLEY AWARD
CHICAGO,
February 18, 2002Chris Myers, Nicole Paulk, and Christine Dudlak
have been named the winners of the American College of Healthcare Executives
2002 Dean Conley Award for their article "Genomics: Implications for Health
Systems," published in the Spring 2001 issue of Frontiers of Health
Services Management.
The award will be presented on Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at the Malcolm
T. MacEachern Memorial Lecture and Luncheon during the American College
of Healthcare Executives 45th Congress on Healthcare Management at the
Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago.
Named
for ACHE's executive director from 1942 to 1965, the Dean Conley Award
is granted annually by ACHE to recognize contributions to healthcare management
literature and to encourage healthcare executives to write and publish
articles. "Genomics: Implications for Health Systems" was selected by
ACHE's Article of the Year Awards Committee.
In
the article, Myers, Paulk, and Dudlak examine how genomics is revolutionizing
the way healthcare providers diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases, and
how these changes will affect healthcare organizations. The authors predict
that, over time, genomics will dramatically change the way healthcare
is provided and place pressure on providers to meet increased demand for
gene testing and genetic counseling. Based on these predictions, the authors
suggest two positions that healthcare organizations can take regarding
genomics: they can position themselves in the community as the leader
in offering the latest gene-based tests and therapies, or they can establish
themselves as a community-based referral service that connects consumers
to the latest developments in genomics. The authors also pose several
questions about health system processes and functions and how they will
evolve to incorporate gene-based testing and therapy.
Myers
is director, Tiber Group, LLC, a healthcare strategic management consulting
firm in Chicago, and Paulk is director, Corporate Strategy, Northwestern
Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Dudlak, a former consultant for the Tiber
Group, is currently sales manager at Chicago Paper Tube and Can Company
in Chicago.
