Two Patient Safety Lessons for a Post-Pandemic Age

Healthcare leaders are challenged to find ways of discussing error without assigning blame, but also without normalizing error.

Thomasine Gorry, MD, former vice chair, quality and safety/associate dean, continuing education, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, shares her thoughts on patient safety in this latest ACHE blog post “Two Patient Safety Lessons for a Post-Pandemic Age.”

Working as an ophthalmologist deployed to rows of tents lining the sidewalk leading to the ED during the pandemic, Gorry studied patient safety first-hand. She argues that the goal of patient safety should be “to deliver quality care without harm and, most importantly, without regret. A strong safety system should allow us to take risks and distinguish what was inevitable and what was avoidable.”

Now working in the pharmacovigilance branch of the pharmaceutical industry, Gorry’s blog post looks specifically at two items that she believes are systematically omitted when discussing patient safety: structural analysis of errors and individual responsibility for safety. Read her blog post here to learn more.

Mitigating Physician Burnout

Addressing physician burnout is complex and requires a multifaceted approach, but extensive research indicates that one of the most effective tools to combat it is physician engagement. By giving physicians a seat at the table when creating processes and solutions, healthcare leaders see positive effects across the organization from improved clinical performance metrics to reduced staff attrition.

Engaged physicians are also more likely to be committed to their healthcare organization's mission, goals and values, leading to higher quality of care. Their active involvement in decision-making and continuous improvement processes fosters a collaborative culture, driving innovation and efficiency in healthcare delivery. Engaged physicians also contribute to a positive work environment, reducing turnover and enhancing team morale.

There are several antecedents to embed into your leadership culture before tackling physician engagement. Physicians report that they need leaders who have open lines of communication, hold themselves accountable, invest in interpersonal relationships and give ample opportunities for engagement.

Learn more about strategies to improve physician engagement at the upcoming webinar “Improving Outcomes Through Physician Engagement” with Rachel Thompson, MD, CMO, Core Clinical Partners and immediate past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine. Thompson is experienced in building healthy workplace cultures across large healthcare systems and practice groups.

Core Clinical Partners, an ACHE Premier Corporate Partner, provided the content above.
