Health Equity as a Patient Safety Imperative

Care that is not equitable can impact patient safety, as has been clearly demonstrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately affected marginalized populations, who generally have poorer health and are more vulnerable to disease than nonmarginalized populations. In a feature in the March/April issue of Healthcare Executive, we explore how some healthcare organizations are treating health equity as a patient safety imperative. For example, to attain health equity within their patient populations, it is imperative that health equity become a strategic priority for leadership at RWJBarnabas Health, New Brunswick, N.J.

Sparking High Performance in Yourself and Your Team

“Culture rules, and leaders play a huge role in creating, maintaining, and supporting it. Even when we know that culture is important, we still might question how to influence it. My best advice? Just start.” This is how author Jo Anne Preston begins Chapter 10 of her book, Lead the Way in Five Minutes a Day: Sparking High Performance in Yourself and Your Team. This chapter, along with the 10 others in this book, cover every day, real-life topics such as communication, diversity and workplace culture. Each chapter begins with a self-assessment guide to help readers identify relevant strengths to develop and opportunities for growth.

Although leaders cannot prepare for every situation, they can be prepared to lead, and this book will help spark their leadership potential and show executives the way to high performance. Learn more and order your copy today.

CMS Proposed Rule Includes Policies to Advance Health Equity, Maternal Health

A recently issued Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services proposed rule for inpatient and long-term care hospitals includes measures to advance health equity and improve maternal health outcomes. In addition to annual policies that update Medicare fee-for-service payment rates and policies for inpatient hospitals and long-term care facilities, the fiscal year 2023 Inpatient Prospective Payment System and Long-Term Care Hospital Prospective Payment System rule includes measures that will encourage hospitals to build health equity into their core functions and to improve the safety and quality of maternity care. CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule through June 17. Learn more about the proposed rule here.

In addition, CMS also recently outlined a strategy to advance health equity, challenging healthcare industry leaders to address systemic inequities. Building on the agency’s commitment to make health equity the first “pillar” of its strategic vision, CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure is inviting healthcare industry leaders to make commitments to advance health equity and work with CMS to share best practices to address systemic inequities in the delivery of care. To ensure sustained progress through meaningful initiatives, CMS will convene industry stakeholders, including healthcare facilities, beginning this summer. Learn more here.

In related news, Brooks-LaSure is holding a national stakeholder call April 26 to provide updates on the CMS strategic vision and key accomplishments during the first quarter of 2022. CMS invites stakeholders to join the call to learn more about how they can partner with CMS as it implements its vision. RSVP for the call here. Additionally, the CMS Office of Minority Health is hosting a Health Equity Symposium webinar April 28 to discuss how CMS is operationalizing health equity across all of its programs. Register here for the symposium.
