ACHE Celebrates National Public Health Week and World Health Day

As we celebrate National Public Health Week and World Health Day, we would like to thank all healthcare professionals for their tireless work to keep our communities healthy and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During National Public Health Week, April 6–12, join us and the American Public Health Association in recognizing the contributions of public health and highlighting issues that are important to improving our nation’s health. Each day this week, APHA will focus on a public health topic and identify ways each of us can make a difference. Visit www.nphw.org to learn more. This year, the World Health Organization is celebrating World Health Day April 7 by recognizing the important work of nurses and midwives worldwide. Nurses and other health workers are at the forefront of the COVID-19 response, providing high-quality, respectful treatment and care.

Please visit the World Health Day website to learn more about the critical care that nurses and midwives provide, and take a moment to read the WHO’s first-ever State of the World’s Nursing Report, which will launch April 7. A similar report on the midwifery workforce will be released in 2021.

CMS Interoperability and Patient Access Final Rule Call 

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will discuss tomorrow the provisions and impact of the Interoperability and Patient Access final rule.

Seema Verma, CMS administrator, will open the call Tuesday, April 7, 2–3:30 Eastern time, followed by an overview from CMS experts. Register here for Medicare Learning Network events.

Topics to be discussed include the following:

  • Patient access application programming interface
  • Provider directory API
  • Payer-to-payer data exchange
  • Improving the dual eligible experience
  • Public reporting and information blocking
  • Provider digital contact information
  • Revisions to the conditions of participation for hospitals and critical access hospitals

Participants are encouraged to review the final rule prior to the call. This call is applicable to all Medicare fee-for-service providers and industrywide stakeholders.

2020 Richard J. Stull Student Essay Competition Winners

Six students won the Richard J. Stull Student Essay Competition in Healthcare Management, designed to stimulate student writing about important issues and developments in healthcare management. The competition is open to active ACHE members enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate U.S. or Canadian health administration program within ACHE’s Higher Education Network.

First Place, Graduate Division: Rachael E. Parrill, University of Louisville: “A Framework for Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating a Social Determinants of Health Initiative.”

First Place, Undergraduate Division: Matthew J. David, Auburn University: “Utilizing Technology to Combat Clinician Burnout.”

Second Place, Graduate Division: Amanda E. Fronk, Xavier University: “The Looking Glass Initiative: Using Virtual Reality and Video Game Simulations to Improve Clinical Decision-Making and Reduce Health Care Disparities in African Americans.”

Second Place, Undergraduate Division: Aleksandra Pawlikowska-Czaja, Governors State University: “Importance of Diversity Among Leadership and Governing Boards.”

Third Place, Graduate Division: María Victoria Mejía Franco, University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee: “A Road to Population-Based Payments.”

Third Place, Undergraduate Division: Nolan A. Ehrbar, Texas State University: “Public Health and Climate Change: Strategic Planning for Healthcare Organizations.”
