Addressing Health Worker Burnout: A Guide From the U.S. Surgeon General
Although healthcare worker burnout has been an issue for the field since before the pandemic, it has only intensified under the strain of the ongoing public health crisis. The prevalence of burnout has become so worrisome that U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, recently issued an advisory about health worker burnout and recommendations for how to address the crisis.
In “Understand Key Takeaways,” the advisory addresses causes of burnout, workforce shortages, differential impacts on health workers and how health worker burnout affects all of us. It also offers a health worker well-being Q&A with Murthy, along with suggestions for taking action tailored to various roles within the healthcare system. For example, the guidance recommends healthcare organizations transform workplace culture to empower health workers and be responsive to their voices and needs, and to show health workers how much they are valued. Finally, the advisory offers toolkits and other resources to help spread the word.

Webinar: Health Law Today
The recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency have given states primary control over the regulation of abortion and carbon emissions from power plants, respectively (carbon emissions contribute to air and water pollution, both of which pose harm to public health). During “Health Law Today: The Supreme Court, Public Health and What’s Next,” legal expert Sarah F. Fontenot, JD, will discuss current legislative efforts and the impact of judicial opinion on jurisdiction between the federal government and the states as it pertains to healthcare.
Join Fontenot for this Aug. 23 webinar to investigate the implications of the recent Supreme Court decisions on future governmental rule-making and healthcare executive decision-making, and earn 1 ACHE Qualified Education credit. Register today.
