Program Spotlight:

Gain the Skills You Need Today at the Leaders Conference

Leading a healthcare organization in today’s challenging environment demands a great deal of skill and resilience. Next month, we invite you to join us for a two-day workshop that will inspire and better equip emerging healthcare executives to handle their organization’s critical issues. During the Leaders Conference, Sept. 15–29, attendees will discover their leadership strengths through a 360-degree assessment and develop a deep understanding of transformational leadership and the competencies associated with it. Under the guidance of leadership experts Jamie L. Haeuser, principal, Haeuser Health Strategies, and Beth E. Walker, FACHE, CEO, Ochsner Baptist, Ochsner Health System, participants will apply current leadership theories to build their individual leadership development plans.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to sign up for one-on-one coaching sessions with expert faculty for more in-depth analysis of their assessments. Position yourself for success while earning up to 9 ACHE Face-to-Face Education credits, and register today.

Catch Up on Summer Reading With New Physician Engagement Books

“In preparing to engage physicians, leaders face a complex mosaic of people, environments, and goals,” writes Harjot Singh, MD, in the first of two new volumes about physician engagement. As the editor of these new books, Carson F. Dye, FACHE, president/CEO of Exceptional Leadership LLC, draws on his healthcare leadership and management experience of more than 40 years to define engagement and explain why physicians should play an active role in governance, leadership and management.

Enhanced Physician Engagement: What It Is, Why You Need It, and Where to Begin, Volume 1, examines physician engagement as a strategic and tactical priority, offering models to help readers understand the book’s foundational concepts and visualize what physician engagement can look like in their own organizations. Its companion volume, Enhanced Physician Engagement: Tools and Tactics for Success, Volume 2, offers a step-by-step guide on how to involve and inspire physicians. In both volumes, recognized physician leaders, such as Singh, provide personal viewpoints on what successful physician engagement looks like to them and share lessons learned.

Order your copy by Sept. 7 to take advantage of the HAP Summer Sale. Be sure to use the promo code SUMMER21 at checkout to receive an additional 20% discount off the already-reduced member prices.

Baldrige Hospital Champions Focus, Agility and Process Improvement

Although Adventist Health White Memorial faced many of the same pandemic-related obstacles as other hospitals and health systems, the culture AHWM has built as part of its pursuit for performance excellence allowed the organization to navigate these challenges with success. In a recent ACHE Blog post, John G. Raffoul, DPA, FACHE, president of AHWM, writes about the work the hospital did to earn the 2019 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, and how that preparation allowed the organization to quickly pivot during the pandemic. CMS to Cover Additional Doses of COVID-19 Vaccines

Last week, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced it will pay to administer additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines consistent with the Food and Drug Administration’s recently amended emergency use authorizations. On Aug. 12, the FDA amended its EUAs for both the Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine and the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to allow for an additional dose in certain immunocompromised people. Using CPT code 0003A for the Pfizer vaccine and CPT code 0013A for the Moderna vaccine, CMS will pay the same amount to administer this additional dose as it did for the other doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, which cost approximately $40 each.

CMS will hold and then process all claims with these codes after it completes claim system updates no later than Aug. 27.
