Program Spotlight: Learn Leadership Skills to Navigate the Current Landscape
In a transformative healthcare environment that has been further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, leaders need practical tools for managing change and encouraging staff to adopt new ways of delivering care and services. “Practical Leadership Strategies in an Age of Change” will provide healthcare executives with strategies for leading a changing workforce and encouraging innovation that supports enhanced quality and outcomes.
One hallmark of transformation is the healthcare system’s rapid move from fee-for-service toward a risk-based, capitated population health system. When healthcare leaders attend “Leading in a Changing Environment: Population Health,” they will learn to identify key components of a population health program and the essential steps to build it.
Transformation won’t be possible, however, without the dedication of a committed workforce. “Leading for Success: Creating a Committed Workforce” will address the key elements of change management and employee engagement to help remedy the gap between leadership behavior and organizational performance and why autocratic structures fail to outperform horizontally structured organizations.
Healthcare leaders can learn these new skills and more while also earning ACHE Face-to-Face Education credits during our new Virtual Face-to-Face Education Courses. Browse through upcoming courses and be sure to check back frequently as new courses will be added each week.
Forces That Will Determine the Future of Healthcare
The COVID-19 pandemic has upended economies, supply chains and public health around the globe. It’s also accelerated change within the U.S. health system. Consider how the conversation in healthcare has shifted from achieving larger Triple Aim objectives to more specific and time-sensitive demands to drive insights that save lives and inform public policy decisions. By giving form to the once abstract benefits of real-time data sharing and interoperability, the pandemic is driving positive transformation that will continue to shape the future of healthcare.
To navigate this new landscape, leaders should work together to address the long-term economic impacts. A new report from Optum provides must-have insights from providers, health plans and other stakeholders. It identifies macro environmental features that will directly shape the future of healthcare, including:
- Economic limitations: Significant unemployment, business reconfiguration and a slow return to economic stability and growth.
- Reconfigured delivery models: Nontraditional entrants, telemedicine, digital expansion and disruption.
- Value chain reorganization: Meaningful reorganization within the healthcare value chain to prioritize value creation and holistic care coordination.
To learn more, watch a recording of the webinar “Beyond the Crisis—Key Impacts of COVID-19 and Assessing the Path Forward.” Presented by Keith Shah, PhD, FACHE, and Sasha Preble of Optum Advisory Services, this free webinar is eligible for 1 ACHE Qualified Education credit.

COVID-19 Leadership Appreciation
In a special online-only section of Healthcare Executive magazine, we will be highlighting the amazing work of our members as they lead through the pandemic.
Up first are stories from Judith L. Frum, RN, RRT, COO, Memorial Regional Hospital, Hollywood, Fla., and Jeffrey A. Flaks, FACHE, CEO, Hartford (Conn.) HealthCare. Frum discusses lessons she’s learned from previous disasters and how she’s applied those to helping local nursing facilities weather the pandemic. She also addresses how she has developed as a leader, especially being empowered to make a difference. Flaks says “in a crisis, you have to throw out the book on how you run the operations normally. You don’t have the luxury of time when making decisions or the benefit of being perfect.”
Each week, we will add new stories to the COVID-19 Leadership Appreciation section of HealthcareExecutive.org.
