CDC Updates Guidance for Measles Prevention in Healthcare Settings

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently updated its recommendations to prevent the transmission of measles in the healthcare setting. Specifically, the interim guidance recommends:

  • Ensuring that all healthcare personnel have presumptive evidence of immunity to measles;
  • Rapidly identifying and isolating patients with known or suspected measles
  • Adhering to standard and airborne precautions for patients with known or suspected measles;
  • Routinely promoting and facilitating respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette
  • Appropriately managing exposed and ill healthcare personnel

Earlier this year, the CDC released a toolkit to help healthcare organizations address the current measles outbreak. Ensuring community immunization is the most important measure to prevent measles transmission in all settings, according to the CDC.

Between Jan. 1 and July 25, 2019, 30 states have reported 1,164 individual cases of measles to the CDC. This is the greatest number of cases reported in the United States since 1992 and since measles was declared eliminated in 2000.
