Spotlight:

Using Innovation to Achieve the Impossible

For a fresh take on solving highly complex problems, take a lesson from Mick Ebeling, founder and CEO of Not Impossible Labs. Named by Fortune magazine as one of the Top 50 World’s Greatest Leaders, Ebeling’s mantra has become “commit, then figure it out.”

“We are constantly transitioning things from impossible to possible,” says Ebeling in the latest episode of the Healthcare Executive podcast, “Innovation in a Tumultuous World.” Ebeling says it’s critical that leaders mine and nurture creativity within their organizations to achieve goals.

By pushing the bar on innovation and convening disparate teams of hackers, doers, makers and thinkers, Ebeling’s Not Impossible Labs has created devices that improve the world by bringing accessibility to all. For example, he and his team have developed technology to craft 3D-printed arms for an amputee, given a voice to an ALS patient who hadn’t spoken in 15 years and allowed a paraplegic street artist to draw again.

Ebeling shares emotionally resonating stories of using technology and creativity to make an impact. He’s the author of Not Impossible: The Art and Joy of Doing What Couldn't Be Done. And if you plan on attending the Congress on Healthcare Leadership in March, you can hear him in person at the MacEachern Memorial Lecture and Luncheon, where he will present: “Creativity for Breakfast—Innovation in a Tumultuous World.”

Thank You for Supporting Future Leaders

We extend our heartfelt gratitude for donations received on ACHE’s fourth annual Day of Giving, Feb. 13. Your generosity helped raise over $6,700 for the Fund for Healthcare Leadership. It’s also moved us closer to our goal of raising $1 million by March 2025 for the $1 Million Campaign for Healthcare Leaders of Tomorrow.

By donating to the Fund, you help provide resources for future leaders in our field. The need to assist aspiring leaders continues throughout the year, so if you missed this opportunity, please consider making a contribution at another time. Many organizations offer a matching gift program, so check with your employer to help increase the impact of your donation.

Recognition Opportunity: Apply for Baldridge Award 2024

Online applications are now being accepted for the redesigned 2024 Baldrige Award. The award seeks to identify and recognize organizations that are role models of resilience and long-term success in six categories covering the U.S. economy, including the healthcare sector.

The redesigned award program features a streamlined, results-focused evaluation process using a tailored set of new Baldrige Award criteria derived from the literature on organizational resilience and the Baldrige Excellence Framework. The new criteria are intended to help organizations adapt, innovate and thrive in a dynamic environment where change and disruption are constant.

To be considered for a Baldridge Award, an organization must “demonstrate success and sustainability and…want to share their best practices to enable other organizations and their communities to become more resilient,” says Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

A new, user-friendly online process will allow applicants to submit information about their organization’s performance results or outcomes in areas such as leadership, planning, workforce and operations.

Applicants must complete the eligibility portion of the application process by 6 p.m. Eastern time March 12, 2024. The award application deadline is April 2 at 6 p.m. Eastern.
