Congress 2023 Early Bird Pricing Ends Today
With the 2023 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, Monday, March 20, to Thursday, March 23, less than one month away, today is your last chance to take advantage of early bird pricing. As the premier event dedicated to advancing healthcare leadership excellence, there are many reasons why you should attend Congress, including networking, career advice and insights from subject matter experts on the most critical issues our field is facing. Following are examples of three education sessions you won’t want to miss.
Leadership Insights: Bridging the Leadership Gender Gap in Healthcare (Monday, March 20)
Although women constitute more than three-quarters of the healthcare workforce, they hold less than 15% of CEO positions in health systems. This gender equity gap at the top makes it challenging for organizations to create a culture where women can thrive. During “Leadership Insights: Bridging the Leadership Gender Gap in Healthcare,” Linkage CEO and leadership expert Jennifer McCollum will explore trends affecting women in today’s workforce, particularly those related to the pandemic, and what healthcare organizations can do to overcome the gender gap in leadership. She’ll also review four critical areas of focus that organizations can leverage to engage, develop and advance women leaders.
Leadership Insights: It Takes a Village—Partnering for Success to Prevent Gun Violence (Tuesday, March 21)
With gun violence rates steadily increasing throughout the United States, hospitals and health systems play a central role in the treatment and recovery for many individuals and communities, and the leaders of these organizations hold a key role in gun violence prevention. Learn how healthcare leaders can make gun violence prevention a priority in their organizations from Chethan Sathya, MD, a pediatric general surgeon and director of Northwell Health Gun Violence Prevention Center, in a recent episode of the Healthcare Executive Podcast.
Sathya will also talk extensively about this topic at Congress. During the session “Leadership Insights: It Takes a Village—Partnering for Success to Prevent Gun Violence,” Sathya and fellow Northwell Health leader Sandeep Kapoor, MD; author and former top-performing firearms executive Ryan Busse; and Heartland Alliance Executive Director Chico Tillmon, PhD—all top experts and stakeholders in this space—will share best practices in leveraging cross-sector partnerships to interrupt the cycle of gun violence and create safer, healthier communities for all.
Hot Topic: Responsible Innovation in the Age of Digital Health: The Expanding Opportunities for Healthcare CEOs (Wednesday, March 22)
The definition of “healthcare executive” is changing, and the next generation of healthcare executives will need to engage in responsible innovation practices that prioritize mission and margin both for the patients they serve and their community. In a recent episode of the Healthcare Executive Podcast, Steve K. Klasko, MD, a transformative leader and advocate for a revolution in our systems of healthcare and higher education, delves into what healthcare CEOs will need to be successful leaders going forward.
He will also address this topic at Congress when he co-presents “Hot Topic: Responsible Innovation in the Age of Digital Health: The Expanding Opportunities for Healthcare CEOs.” During this session, Reetika Kumar, MD, FACP, market medical executive/vice president, Strategic Clinical Solutions, Independence Blue Cross; David Shulkin, MD, president, Shulkin Solutions LLC; Liz Kwo, MD, CMO, Everly Health; and Jonathan Gleason, MD, executive vice president/chief clinical officer, Prisma Health, will join Klasko in sharing how executives can successfully create a path within healthcare organizations to set other leaders up for success.
If you haven’t already reserved your spot at Congress with one of our registration options, don’t delay! Education sessions are filling up quickly—some are already full—and early bird pricing ends today, Mon., Feb. 27. Visit ache.org/Congress to register and learn more.

Thank You for Supporting Future Leaders on ACHE’s Day of Giving
We extend our heartfelt gratitude for the donations we received on ACHE’s annual Day of Giving, which was Feb. 13. Because of your generosity, we raised over $12,000 for the Fund for Healthcare Leadership. The Fund provides scholarships for our Executive Program—which offers extensive and immersive experiences for aspiring leaders—and wholly supports the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program and the Thomas C. Dolan Career Accelerator Program, which help to promote and prepare diverse and highly qualified healthcare leaders for the future.
“To be selected as one of the 2022 Dolan Executive Scholars is both an honor and an achievement for me,” says 2022 Dolan Executive Diversity Program scholar Megha Kachalia, FACHE, assistant vice president, physician and ambulatory planning, MedStar Health, in an ACHE Blog post about her experience with the program. “I am ever so grateful to ACHE for providing an exceptionally designed and well-rounded leadership program that has added professional richness to my career.”
When you donate to the Fund, you help provide resources for the future leaders of our field. Although the Day of Giving is past, the need to assist aspiring leaders continues. We hope you will join us in making a difference for talented individuals like Kachalia by visiting ache.org/Fund.
New Frontiers of Health Services Management Discusses Governance Issues
In the third segment of a three-part series examining how healthcare organizations are addressing environmental, social and governance issues, the spring 2023 issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management explores the governance component of this triad of concerns.
For example, Richard G. Greenhill, DHA, FACHE, of Texas Tech, and Merette Khalil of the World Health Organization, write that sound governance is the key to resilience for hospitals and their communities. In another feature, Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of Northwell Health, illustrates how good governance drives his system’s accountability to its community. Measuring and reporting are vital to Northwell’s efforts, he explains.
Board members also share their perspectives. Michele Baker Richardson, JD, board vice-chair of Advocate Health and chair of Advocate Aurora Health, describes how she views corporate stewardship through the lens of environmental, social and governance interests. Meanwhile, Antoinette Hardy-Waller, a member of the CommonSpirit Health board of stewardship trustees, points out that boards need diverse perspectives. When they “broaden their thinking,” they serve their communities better, she suggests.
Finally, Reese Jackson, JD, president and CEO of Chesapeake Regional Healthcare, shares in a case study the CRH experience in assembling a scalable outreach response to its community health needs assessment.

Black Maternal Healthcare: A First-Person Perspective
Upon learning in 2022 that she was pregnant at the age of 44, Stacy-Ann Okoth, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, describes feeling shock, surprise and terror in a new ACHE Blog post about Black maternal healthcare. Okoth, system senior vice president/associate chief nurse executive, Jefferson Health (Pa.), and a 2022 Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program scholar, worried that “I too would become a statistic of a Black maternal demise,” citing a statistic from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that the COVID-19 pandemic increased pregnancy complications among Black women by 2.9 times the rate for white women. She was also concerned about her age, facing judgement about her ability to do her job and the reality that today’s healthcare providers are “overwhelmed with the volume of patients and are understaffed due to the healthcare workforce shortage.”
In her blog post, Okoth shares the challenges she and her husband faced during her pregnancy, including a difficult conversation that Okoth lamented is “a must, particularly in households with Black women.” She also underscores the need for the “U.S. healthcare space to be more conducive to mothers,” calling for laws that support patients and programs that educate the community. Visit ache.org/Blog to read Okoth’s full blog post.
