Program Spotlight: Creating an Innovative Ecosystem
Innovation improvements, says Ninfa M. Saunders, DHA, FACHE, president and CEO, Navicent Health, can include becoming familiar with principles of portfolio management. In this exclusive Healthcare Executive Q&A found online only, Saunders, a presenter for Masters Series Session 3: Masters of Innovation, offers a preview of the topic she will discuss at the 2020 Congress on Healthcare Leadership with co-presenter Marc L. Boom, FACHE, FACP. Both are known for employing innovation in their strategies and operations to improve patient outcomes, engage their staff and clinicians, and provide more efficient and positive results.
Each year, Congress highlights the approaches and outcomes of some of the healthcare field’s most successful leaders during its Masters Series Sessions. Innovation is one of four critical areas the Masters Series will address this year. The other three 90-minute sessions will tackle: care delivery, executive leadership and health equity.
In the weeks leading up to Congress, more web-exclusive previews of the Masters Series Sessions and other Congress events will be available on HealthcareExecutive.org. Register for Congress today at ache.org/Congress.

Sixty-Five Years of Thought Leadership
In this Q&A, Nicole B. Thomas, FACHE, hospital president at Baptist Medical Center–South, speaks about the responsibilities of helping those underrepresented in the profession.
Thomas is among the strong editorial lineup in the January/February issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management, which kicks off its 65th year of thought leadership and original research.
Joseph R. Betancourt, MD, director of The Disparities Solutions Center based at Massachusetts General Hospital, writes about how inequitable care leads to “overall diminished value, higher costs, and wider gaps in health outcomes,” and describes four proven tactics to address these harms.
In another article, Susan DeVore, president and CEO of Premier Inc., shares some of the inventive ways healthcare providers are turning disruptive financial pressures into opportunities.
Research topics include measurement of patient-reported outcomes, advertising to boost domestic medical travel, anesthesia staffing models and patient navigation services.
The Journal of Healthcare Management is available online to all ACHE members. This and past issues are available at ache.org/Journals.
