Program Spotlight:
New Sessions on Today’s Top Issues Added to 2023 Congress Lineup
At ACHE’s Congress on Healthcare Leadership, Monday, March 20, to Thursday, March 23, attendees will hear candid perspectives from leaders within healthcare and beyond about issues that matter most. Following are previews of just-added sessions featuring expert speakers on topics such as gun violence prevention; driving diversification, growth and partnerships; bridging the leadership gender gap; and how healthcare is shifting beyond hospital walls.
Monday, March 20
Driven by increasingly savvy healthcare consumers and a widening gap in health disparities, healthcare is undoubtedly shifting beyond the four walls of the hospital and into the realms of digital health and hospital-at-home programs. Join Deloitte leaders Jay Bhatt, DO, Wendy Gerhardt and Asif Dhar, MD, as they share expert insights into why and how care is shifting to alternative sites during “Leadership Insights: Healthcare’s Next Frontier Will Go Beyond the Hospital.” They will also discuss how healthcare organizations can remain competitive while making strides toward an equitable future for health.
Although women constitute more than three-quarters of the healthcare workforce, they hold less than 15% of CEO positions in health systems. This gender equity gap at the top makes it challenging for organizations to create a culture where women can thrive. During “Leadership Insights: Bridging the Leadership Gender Gap in Healthcare,” Linkage CEO and leadership expert Jennifer McCollum will explore the latest talent trends among women resulting from the specific impact of the pandemic. She’ll also review four critical areas of focus that organizations can leverage to engage, develop and advance women leaders.
Tuesday, March 21
Join Ochsner Health’s new CEO, Pete November, for “Leadership Insights: Driving Diversification, Growth and Partnerships.” He’ll discuss how the New Orleans-based healthcare system is focusing on the development of academic and workforce programs as it expands its geographic footprint across the Gulf South. November will also share guidance on how other healthcare leaders can leverage partnerships to drive growth.
With gun violence rates steadily increasing throughout the United States, hospitals and health systems play a central role in the treatment and recovery for many individuals and communities, and the leaders of these organizations hold a key role in gun violence prevention. “Leadership Insights: It Takes a Village—Partnering for Success to Prevent Gun Violence” features Northwell Health leaders Chethan Sathya, MD, and Sandeep Kapoor, MD, and author and former top-performing firearms executive Ryan Busse, all top experts and stakeholders in this space, as they share best practices in leveraging cross-sector partnerships to interrupt the cycle of gun violence and create safer, healthier communities for all.
If you haven’t already reserved your spot with one of our registration options, don’t delay! Education sessions are filling up quickly—some are already full—and early bird pricing ends Mon., Feb. 27. Visit ache.org/Congress to register and learn more.

Students and Host Sites: Discover the Benefits of IFDHE’s Summer Enrichment Program
The American Hospital Association’s Institute for Diversity and Health Equity’s Summer Enrichment Program grows and strengthens the pipeline of healthcare leaders from underrepresented groups, and places diverse graduate students pursuing advanced degrees in healthcare administration or a related field in 10-week, paid internships across the country. Starting in February, the Institute’s staff will be working with organizations to match students with host sites for internships, which generally take place from June through August.
Since 2016, ACHE and the Institute have been co-promoting the Summer Enrichment Program to increase the number of students who participate in the program each year and, accordingly, increase the number of host sites. Just as students benefit from experiential learning, healthcare organizations that register to become host sites gain access to the healthcare leaders of tomorrow—former SEP interns are now CEOs and administrators of hospitals and healthcare organizations nationwide.
A Mutually Beneficial Experience
Take, for example, Main Line Health, a health system serving portions of Philadelphia and its western suburbs, which has served as a Summer Enrichment Program host site since 2005. “Annually, the Summer Enrichment Program brings a new cohort of creative, diverse and talented students to Main Line Health,” says Shonalie Roberts, system director of Health Equity. “The program helps us to challenge and broaden the thinking of both the students and our organization,” she says. More than 40 interns have matriculated through the program at Main Line Health, and the organization hired roughly 56% of graduating interns for either full-time employment or fellowship roles immediately after their internships.
Grady Health System, Atlanta, has also hosted Summer Enrichment Program interns—or health equity fellows, as they are called at Grady. “The fellows worked on an access project with the Breast Cancer Screening Mammogram project and were able to schedule 170 women for screening mammograms in a two-week period of time,” says Yolanda Wimberly, MD, senior vice president/inaugural chief health equity officer, of the two 2022 fellows. The fellows also worked with the system’s Teen Leadership and Experience Program, and at the end of the program, the organization hired one of the fellows to continue working on access projects. “Their input was invaluable and they were agile, adept and intelligent,” she says.
Emmett Taliaferro, one of the 2022 Grady fellows, says he is thankful for the Summer Enrichment Program for providing the opportunity to “connect with a health system” and “prepare me for my future career.” “I would recommend the Summer Enrichment Program to anyone who wants to develop professionally and get real-life experience,” says Taliaferro, a graduate student pursuing an MHA at the University of Georgia. He expects to graduate in May 2023.
In 2022, ACHE also hosted an intern through its Diversity Internship and the Summer Enrichment Program. “I’ve spent time in each of ACHE’s departments to see how they all contribute to the organization’s mission, vision and strategy,” writes Morgan E. Krizan in an ACHE Blog post about her experience with the program. Not only did she have the opportunity to collaborate with each department on projects and assignments related to improving the member experience, but she also “traveled to various healthcare organizations around Chicago to experience how the work ACHE is doing is being implemented in the field.”
We hope these host site and intern experiences inspire you to help strengthen equity and inclusion in healthcare organizations. Learn more and register today.
