Patient No Longer

Moving Beyond Telehealth to Improve Care

Specialized physician care for patients in rural and small communities typically relies on telehealth visits or requires long hours of travel for physicians or patients.

Thanks to outside-the-box thinking and hologram technology, patients at the West Cancer Center & Research Institute’s clinics in Paris, Tenn., and Corinth, Miss., can easily see the best physicians at their local clinic.

Despite sounding high-tech, the process is relatively simple, and “in many ways, it actually appears as though the physician is really in the room,” explain Mitch Graves, CEO, and Sylvia Richey, MD, CMO and a medical oncologist, in the current issue of Healthcare Executive.

Physicians sit in a production studio while their entire 3D image is beamed into an exam room at the remote location, using a lightbox. Patients can see the physician’s body language, an important detail that can get lost in the talking heads typical of a telehealth visit.

“It was exactly like an in-person visit,” according to one patient. Another said he was able to see everything clearly. “The body language (of the physician) was there, which made it very personal.”

Delivering Health to the Whole Community

Hospitals and health systems that are looking to address quality of care for all patient populations need appropriate funding and commitment from organizational leadership.

Maria Hernandez, PhD, president and COO, Impact4Health LLC, and ACHE faculty, discussed actionable steps leaders can take to help change their organization and community approaches to addressing population health at a recent seminar in Anchorage, Alaska.

Hernandez introduced key opportunities for healthcare organizations to partner with community groups, public health departments, major employers and health plans as an integral part of her equity playbook. “The clear objective for population health initiatives is transforming the healthcare delivery landscape to deliver more safe, effective and patient-centered care to all populations, especially underserved and marginalized communities,” Hernandez said,

One of dozens of expert ACHE faculty members, Hernandez travels to hospitals and health systems across the country to present in-person, customizable and cost-effective learning opportunities for staff.

Everyone Wins When Recruiting New Members

Current members who recruit colleagues to join ACHE or help Members to advance to Fellow through the Leader-to-Leader Program earn valuable rewards points. As an added incentive, new members who join ACHE in July receive 50% off their annual membership dues.

Nancy A. Susick, RN, FACHE, who recruited the most members from hospitals and healthcare settings last year, found value beyond the perk of reward points. “It is important to me to give back and encourage other healthcare professionals to become members of ACHE,” she says. “The Leader-to-Leader Rewards Program is a great mechanism for me to encourage others to join ACHE and start receiving the multiple benefits that I have received,” she says.

Among those member benefits are informative publications, robust educational programming through the Learning Center and access to the exclusive Career Resource Center.

Members can redeem reward points for education programs and books or a selection of ACHE merchandise including polo shirts, pullovers, umbrellas and more. In addition to earning points, those who recruit or advance the most members in one of three areas—hospitals and healthcare settings, academia or the military—are recognized at the Congress on Healthcare Leadership during the Malcom T. MacEachern Memorial Lecture and Luncheon.

For a handy email template to help you start recruiting new members, click the “Refer a Colleague” box on the Leader-to-Leader home page. For questions, contact the Customer Service Center at (312) 434-9400 or contact@ache.org.
