Leadership Spotlight:

Enhancing Your Physician Engagement

Although healthcare worker burnout has been an issue for the field since before the pandemic, it has only intensified under the strain of the ongoing public health crisis. The prevalence of burnout has become so worrisome that U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, recently issued new guidelines on how to address the crisis. For example, the guidance recommends healthcare organizations transform workplace culture to empower health workers and be responsive to their voices and needs, and to show health workers how much they are valued.

As healthcare leaders work to implement these recommendations, improving physician engagement will be critical to their efforts. Highly engaged physicians help their organizations navigate changing delivery and payment models, improve clinical outcomes and meet patient demands for better access to safe, quality care. Available now as a two-volume bundle for the discounted price of $75, Enhanced Physician Engagement offers a focused definition of engagement, explaining why physicians should play an active role in governance, leadership and management.

Drawing on more than 40 years of healthcare leadership and management experience, editor Carson F. Dye, FACHE, examines physician engagement as a strategic and tactical priority in Enhanced Physician Engagement: What It Is, Why You Need It, and Where to Begin, Volume 1, while Enhanced Physician Engagement: Tools and Tactics for Success, Volume 2 offers readers a how-to guide for involving and inspiring physicians.

As healthcare leaders make important strides toward improving the well-being of their workforce, this bundle will be an essential tool in their efforts to enhance physician engagement. Take advantage of this discounted offer and order your bundle today.

The Governing Body’s Role in Health Equity

“When leadership at the very top of the organization—governance—makes health equity a priority, improved patient safety outcomes is the result,” say experts in a recent article about the governing body’s role in health equity.

Key steps the governing body can take to achieve organizational health equity goals is to include them in the strategic plan, then ensure senior leaders operationalize them to establish a culture that understands and embraces the goals. For example, operationalizing means ensuring clinical and operational leaders are supported with the tools necessary, such as teams, technology and data, to implement the health equity strategy and achieve success.

CMS: Interchangeable Biosimilar Products May Increase Patient Access

Depending on state pharmacy laws, providers may substitute an interchangeable biosimilar product at the pharmacy, much like substituting a generic for a brand-name drug, according to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. In its May 26 MLN Connects e-newsletter, CMS said that substituting an interchangeable biosimilar product helps increase patient access to biologics and may reduce patient cost.

You can learn more about interchangeable biological products from the Food and Drug Administration. CMS recommends providers bookmark FDA’s biosimilars webpage and materials for healthcare providers and patients. Additional FDA resources that providers may find helpful include the following:
