Preparing to Support Staff in Times of Crisis

When fires engulfed the greater Los Angeles area in January, people living and working near the burned or endangered regions were overwhelmed, including healthcare staff and physicians. Keck Medicine of USC, Los Angeles, was prepared to “step into this tragic moment and support our staff, physicians and communities,” writes Rod Hanners, CEO, Keck Medicine, in a recent ACHE Blog.

While crises cannot always be predicted, Keck Medicine began creating a staff support program as a result of data and observations indicating employee needs should be an elevated priority. Employees have been able to reach out for basics, such as housing, food and wellness, as well as more imaginative opportunities like tutoring for children and music therapy.

Following the fires, staff could call an assistance line for help with triaging immediate concerns, a partner agency helped with finding short- and long-term housing options, and employees donated household items to their peers. “Credit for the speed and ease with which we stood up our network of fire resources goes to our human resources and Care for the Caregiver program and staff who acted quickly and decisively,” says Hanners. “They refined the program to far exceed our original intentions.”

Healthcare Solutions Found at Home

Home hospital programs are an example of how health systems today deliver care to communities beyond the hospital and clinic. Anne Klibanski, MD, president and CEO, Mass General Brigham, Boston, explains why home-based care for acute conditions is a promising model in her article “The Future of Care Delivery,” in the May/June issue of Journal of Healthcare Management.

Klibanski says home-based care for acute conditions helps meet the challenges of providing care as hospital occupancy rates climb nationwide. Healthcare leaders “must consider what the impact of this reality will be and how we can best prepare to meet it,” she says. Klibanski stresses that any at-home care experience must improve patient outcomes through effective care models designed to be more patient-centric, technology-enabled, and most importantly, sustainable.

What she has learned through her experience at Mass General Brigham is that “it is possible to deliver better clinical outcomes and increase satisfaction for both patients and providers through acute hospital-level care at home,” says Klibanski.
