Explore the Benefits of Systemness in Operations
“Systemness not only holds the prospect of reorganizing healthcare’s collective approach to providing services but also provides a viable alternative for long-term survival,” write the co-authors of a feature in the latest issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management. In “Systemness Taps the Power of Interdependence in Healthcare,” Charles D. Stokes, FACHE, and Rod Brace—two former hospital system executives who are now partners at Relia Healthcare Advisors—stress the need to assess organizational culture as it relates to principles of independence versus interdependence, and refocus clinical standardization through best-practice protocols and policies.
This article and others in the summer issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management examine how healthcare organizations are pursing the benefits of systemness in their operations. Read this issue online at ache.org/Journals.

Help Shape Our Policy Statements: Comments Due June 30
Each year, select Policy Statements are reviewed to ensure their continued relevance to the field. Many of these statements are derived directly from comments you have shared with us. For that reason, we are asking for your input. Please take a moment to read the five Policy Statements, including one Ethics Policy Statement, under review this year:
- “Access to Affordable Healthcare”
- “Considerations for Healthcare Executive-Supplier Interactions”
- “Ethical Decision-Making for Healthcare Executives”
- “Health Information Confidentiality”
- “Healthcare Executives' Responsibility to Their Communities”
- “Promise-Making, Keeping and Rescinding”
Please submit your comments to PolicyReview@ache.org. The deadline for submitting comments is June 30. The Board of Governors will discuss these statements and any recommended revisions during its November meeting. The revised statements will be posted on ache.org by the end of the year.

Juneteenth Reflections on the Long Road to Equity
This past Saturday, our nation observed Juneteenth—the commemoration of June 19, 1865, the date enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free. “Although Juneteenth is a reason to celebrate the progress made by African Americans, the holiday also represents a time to reflect on how far we as a country must still go to achieve equity for all citizens,” writes ACHE Member Johnathan W. Leonard, associate director of local affordability for United Healthcare, in a recent ACHE Blog post. He notes that one factor impacting health equity is the historical distrust in medical professionals by many in the Black community, and suggests several steps healthcare leaders can take to improve health equity for our most vulnerable populations. For example, researching health disparities in your area and considering the reasons why those disparities exist. Visit ache.org/Blog to learn more.
CMS Webinar This Week on COVID-19 Vaccine Campaign Toolkit
This Thursday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is holding a webinar for healthcare workers about the “We Can Do This: Healthcare Workers Toolkit.” The toolkit (there are multiple toolkits and other resources geared toward different audiences) is part of a larger U.S. Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 public education campaign. The national initiative is meant to increase confidence in and uptake of COVID-19 vaccines while reinforcing basic prevention measures such as mask wearing and social distancing. During the webinar, CMS will discuss the toolkit and other resources and tools for vaccine outreach efforts to diverse communities and at-risk populations. Register here for the June 24 webinar, and please contact Partnership@cms.hhs.gov if you have questions about it.
