Leadership Spotlight: Leading Through a Crisis
How CEOs plan for, respond during and provide support after a crisis will test their leadership proficiency. In her November/December 2019 “Perspectives” column, ACHE President and CEO Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, shares several key principles that can help guide executives when leading through the most trying of circumstances. Although written in response to the rise in deadly mass shootings, the advice given is just as applicable to the healthcare leaders and organizations managing their responses to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) within their communities.
Since sharing the news last week that the ACHE Board of Governors and leadership team have decided to cancel the 2020 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, we continue to update the list of cancellation FAQs as new information becomes available. If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to check this page or contact our Customer Service Center, which is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time, at (312) 424-9400 or contact@ache.org.
Additionally, we encourage you to consult the resources and information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention specific to healthcare professionals, healthcare facilities and health departments, and the American Hospital Association’s COVID-19 updates and resources page.
We understand and support your need to respond effectively to patient and community concerns, and we thank you for your leadership and commitment to advancing healthcare management excellence.

New Book: Diversity on the Executive Path
“Although the starting places for their careers were different, these executives shared many similarities with regard to the importance of education and a strong work ethic,” writes author Diane L. Dixon, EdD, managing principal, D. Dixon & Associates LLC, and educator, University of Maryland School of Public Health, in her new book. Diversity on the Executive Path: Wisdom and Insights for Navigating to the Highest Levels of Healthcare Leadership explores why racially and ethnically diverse leaders are still significantly underrepresented in today’s C-suites. In Chapter 1, available as an excerpt, Dixon shares her findings about the enduring impact of an individual’s background and how it serves as the foundation of an executive career.
Browse the table of contents, the preface and the foreword of the book to learn more, or read a guest blog post written by Dixon for ACHE’s blog about what we’re learning from racially and ethnically diverse executives.
