2025 Executive Program

Strategies for Leading Through Change

Moving past the status quo compels leaders to rethink their assumptions, processes and the way they create value. Ozan Varol, JD, author, law professor and expert on innovation and creativity, believes a culture of innovation requires a mindset that sees uncertain and disruptive conditions as opportunities.

He says uninterrupted success can be dangerous because it lulls people and organizations into complacency. Carving out time for creativity is necessary to bridge the present and the possible. “If you don’t step out of the trenches and intentionally create space for new ideas, you’ll stay stuck doing what you’ve always done.”

Michael J. Sorrell, EdD, visionary leader, institutional change agent and president of Paul Quinn College, invokes a “We-Over-Me” approach that also requires intentional thinking to put the needs of others before the wants of yourself. A simple approach to leadership often is the most effective, and Sorrell emphasizes the importance of being authentic and establishing a vision. “The first thing I would tell healthcare leaders is to remember why people are with you,” he says. “Do not allow the wonkiness of the system to obscure why you are there in the first place.”

Listen to inspiring innovators like Varol and Sorrell discuss overcoming obstacles and seizing opportunities for growth on the Healthcare Executive Podcast—as well as at ACHE’s 2025 Congress on Healthcare Leadership. Varol will deliver the keynote at the Bachmeyer Memorial Address and Luncheon Monday, March 24, and Sorrell will serve as keynote speaker at the Gintzig Commemorative Lecture and Luncheon Wednesday, March 26.

Moving the Needle on Patient Safety

Improving healthcare safety requires leaders who are committed and will take a stand to achieve the highest standards of safety. During Patient Safety Awareness Week, ACHE is dedicated to amplifying the importance of safety and serving as a catalyst for the field of healthcare management.

Our leadership development expertise offers healthcare leaders the foundational tools to build, measure and sustain cultures of safety in the workplace, and ACHE’s Leading for Safety initiative is a good place to begin. Through this initiative, you can take the We Lead for Safety Pledge and assess your organization’s safety culture through a Culture of Safety Organizational Self-Assessment.

Be sure to download Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success, a resource that helps leaders break down priorities and focus on fine-tuning a few pillars of change at a time. ACHE and the IHI Lucian Leape Institute collaborated with leaders of progressive healthcare organizations and globally renowned experts in leadership, safety and culture to develop this resource.

ACHE encourages everyone in healthcare to become familiar with or revisit these resources as we recommit to patient safety.
