Building a Resilient Workforce
Staff shortages, capacity constraints and economic concerns continue to contribute to high rates of employee burnout within today’s healthcare provider organizations. To recruit and retain diverse, inclusive and vibrant healthcare workforces equipped to meet these challenges, technical interventions and cultural changes are needed.
For organizations to thrive, it is vital to embrace innovative leadership and design new care models that ease workplace stress, increase training and educational opportunities, and provide greater mentorship.
In a recent Healthcare Executive column, authors with UVA Health, Charlottesville, Va., and University Medical Center of El Paso (Texas) write how they have implemented several programs and strategies to build a more resilient workforce for the future.
Both institutions began initiatives to address burnout issues directly. Along with a greater emphasis on steps to retain workers, they are also developing creative new ways to expand their workforce capacity, including a new nursing pipeline and nurse extern program with on-the-job training.

2024 Healthcare Real Estate Outlook: Facilities Optimization
Macroeconomic forecasts predict inflation will slow, but prices and interest rates are expected to remain high. For healthcare systems, this means margins are likely to improve but will remain below the healthy 3% necessary for long-term stability, according to Kaufman Hall.
This may prompt healthcare organizations to explore how real estate can act as a lever to increase patient access and market share, reduce costs and increase patient satisfaction. As the consolidation of health systems and vertical integration continue, health systems and providers have the opportunity to reassess their real estate and facilities to strategically integrate and optimize their locations to generate new revenue.
New entrants to the healthcare space, such as technology companies and private equity, are accelerating the shift toward outpatient care, leading to the “retailization” and “amenitization” of healthcare. As AI gains momentum, health systems aim to invest in facilities optimization to support AI for enhanced patient care and improved overall efficiency.
The 2024 Healthcare Real Estate Outlook predicts this year will be a time for health systems, providers and investors to adjust strategically. By understanding and implementing these trends, healthcare leaders who closely examine their real estate and facilities strategy can stay competitive and thrive in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
