Making Healthcare Healthier Through Music

“At Jefferson Health, Sia’s ‘Courage to Change’ became something of a theme song for our frontline workers and their heroic response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” writes Stephen K. Klasko, MD, in chapter 1 of his new book, Feelin' Alright: How the Message in the Music Can Make Healthcare Healthier. Klasko, executive-in-residence for General Catalyst and former president/CEO of Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health, shares how every Friday, he would send out a playlist that included this song to “inspire and recharge” the organization’s 35,000 employees, and that Sia begins the song by telling her audience that she can relate to everyone’s pain, and that we all need to embrace change to become better.

The “courage to change” is the theme of Klasko’s first chapter in a title that leverages the emotional power of song lyrics to inspire healthcare executives to envision and build a more accessible, high-quality and equitable healthcare system. Klasko uses music as a metaphor to encourage readers to examine what is problematic in the existing healthcare model, and to take tangible steps toward a more consumer-centered healthcare experience. Read the table of contents and introduction to learn more, and order your copy today.

You can listen to Klasko delve into the relationship between music and healthcare while also discussing opportunities for healthcare CEOs during a recent episode of the Healthcare Executive Podcast. And, if you’re planning to attend the 2023 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, you’ll have another opportunity to hear Klasko speak when he co-presents “Hot Topic: Responsible Innovation in the Age of Digital Health: The Expanding Opportunities for Healthcare CEOs.”
