Congress 2021: Explore Value-Based Care and the Workforce of Tomorrow
As organizations plan for the post-pandemic business environment, they will need a road map to help them navigate value-based care in the “new normal.” During this special session offered at the 2021 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, attendees will gain a real-time overview of health policy and the state of the value economy to help effectively plan their progression in risk-based payment.
“The Road Ahead: Value-Based Care and the Workforce of Tomorrow” will address the economic impact of the pandemic on health systems, investment strategies for value-based care, workforce development and gaps in current healthcare practices. Michael Leavitt, founder of Leavitt Partners and former Governor of Utah, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and Eric S. Weaver, DHA, FACHE, executive director, Accountable Care Learning Collaborative, will present this session, with Leavitt providing insights on the need for reskilling and upskilling care teams for value-based care.
Did you miss the early-bird registration deadline for Congress? Not to worry—we have extended discounted pricing until March 11. We hope you’ll join us March 22–25 for this year’s virtual Congress. Visit ache.org/Congress to register and to learn more
Committing to Patient Safety Next Week and Year-Round
Although progress has been made in patient safety over the past two decades, the World Health Organization estimates 134 million adverse events still occur each year due to unsafe care in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries, resulting in some 2.6 million deaths, according to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.
As we prepare to recognize Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 14–20—a dedicated time and platform sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement for growing awareness about patient safety and recognizing the work already being done—ACHE encourages everyone in healthcare to become familiar with or revisit the following resources:
- Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety: This resource draws from evidence-based practices, widely known and effective interventions, exemplar case examples and newer inventions. The plan is the work of 27 federal agencies, safety organizations, experts, and patient and family advocates, including ACHE.
- Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success: This resource helps leaders break down priorities and focus on fine-tuning a few pillars of change at a time. ACHE and the IHI Lucian Leape Institute collaborated with leaders of progressive healthcare organizations and globally renowned experts in leadership, safety and culture to develop this resource.
Learn more about both of these resources by visiting ache.org/Safety and ache.org/SaferTogether.
Join HAP Authors for Discussions on Leadership, Innovation
How have leadership traits evolved over time, particularly over the last year during the pandemic? How is innovation driven and encouraged? This year, 2021 Congress attendees will have the opportunity to hear from experts as they weigh in on questions like these during Health Administration Press author panels.
During a presentation on leadership qualities, authors Diane L. Dixon, EdD, Carson F. Dye, FACHE, and Amer Kaissi, PhD, will discuss professional networks and how they use them differently today, and how healthcare executives can expand their leadership toolbox. Author Michael E. Frisina, PhD, will moderate the panel.
In another panel, author Tracy L. Duberman, PhD, FACHE, will moderate a panel of fellow authors, Jon Burroughs, MD, FACHE, Ryan Donohue and Stephen K. Klasko, MD, as they address how the pandemic has necessitated innovation and discuss population health and the “next big thing” in healthcare.
Two other HAP panels offered at Congress will cover how to become a HAP author and how to contribute to ACHE journals. All HAP presentations will be available as On-Demand Sessions at Congress. Visit ache.org/Congress to learn more and register.
IHF Seeks Abstracts Demonstrating Healthcare Transformation
The International Hospital Federation is calling for abstracts for its 44th World Hospital Congress. With this second call for abstracts, IHF is seeking projects and programs that echo the theme of the upcoming World Hospital Congress, “People on Board: Transforming Healthcare by Blending Agility, Responsiveness and Resilience.” Specifically, abstracts can reflect any of the following subthemes and can be submitted as a verbal presentation or a poster:
- Digital and technology-driven transformation.
- Toward an integrated concept of health and care services model: Value-driven transformation.
- People at the center of healthcare system transformation.
If you have a compelling story to share with healthcare leaders from around the world, IHF invites you to submit your abstract by April 16. Accepted posters will have a chance to compete in the best poster competition at the World Hospital Congress.
Originally scheduled to take place last year, the 44th World Hospital Congress was postponed due to the pandemic. This year, it will be hosted by La Unió Catalana D’Hospitals, Nov. 8-11, in Barcelona, Spain, as a hybrid event, mixing in-person and virtual program elements. Early-bird pricing is available until July 31. You can learn more and register here. If you have questions about submitting an abstract, please contact congress@ihf-fih.org.
Expanding Protections and Rights of Women in the Workplace
“This March … We recognize International Women’s Day as we grapple with the SheCession that has pushed more than 2.5 million women out of the workforce and threatens to undermine decades of progress,” writes Anne McCune, CEO of the Carol Emmott Foundation, in a new ACHE blog post on the topic of ending health inequities.
Although three-quarters of the healthcare workforce is composed of women, they make up just 16% of leadership roles in academic medical schools and less than 40% of hospital executives, McCune writes.
In her blog post, she calls for ending health inequities, with change starting at the highest levels of healthcare leadership. She cites examples of how the Carol Emmott Foundation—an organization with a singular goal of achieving full equity in healthcare leadership and governance—is helping to advance progress in this area. For instance, the foundation is auditing pay gaps and promotion policies at institutions to ensure equity in advancement practices.
Marked annually on March 8, International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. They day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. The theme for International Women’s Day 2021 is “Choose to Challenge” because a challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge comes change.
