Program Spotlight:
Cultivate Core Leadership Competencies Today
Recent research suggests that when leaders are self-aware, they are more effective leaders. They make sounder decisions, build stronger relationships and cultivate more satisfied and engaged employees, all of which results in more profitable organizations. The “Virtual Leadership Development Program,” worth up to 15 ACHE Face-to-Face Education credits, is designed to increase leaders’ self-awareness of their presence and positive impact through skill and personality assessments, coaching sessions, groups discussions and peer exercises with lectures to enhance leadership capacity.
Healthcare leaders who participate in this program will identify barriers that may be preventing them from taking their career to the next level, learn how mindfulness and emotional intelligence are core leadership competencies, and gain awareness and tools to become more resilient leaders. Explore the full program agenda of the Virtual Leadership Development Program and register today.
Using AI to Unlock Capacity: A Requirement, Not a Luxury
Hospital patient volume is rising as the population ages, chronic disease rates increase and patients return to receiving care that was deferred because of the pandemic. At the same time, labor statistics show a burgeoning physician and nurse shortage while reimbursement pressures are increasing. To survive, let alone thrive, it’s essential that hospitals learn how to do more with less.
Hospitals are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to manage limited staff and constrained assets like inpatient beds, infusion chairs and operating rooms. Historically, AI was considered provocative and innovative. Now, AI is a best practice for hospitals that need to expand capacity rather than spend capital.
AI-driven systems are better than existing processes and technologies at matching supply and demand because they use advanced, pattern-matching algorithms and real-time insights to prescribe recommendations, according to a recent blog post written by LeanTaaS CEO and Founder Mohan Giridharadas. Rather than providing more alerts and dashboards, they optimize the underlying processes and provide intelligent recommendations to the front line. As a result, staff and providers can act quickly and decisively.
Leading health systems that have invested in AI-based capacity management are achieving great results. For example:
- UCHealth saw an 8% improvement in opportunity days by unlocking capacity in inpatient beds.
- Baptist Health achieved a 39% increase in prime-time use by optimizing staffing in its ORs.
- Novant Health experienced a 43% decrease in patient wait times for infusion chairs.

Leadership for Great Customer Service
“One of the most intriguing and troubling questions facing healthcare leaders is, ‘How do I create a meaningful and lasting culture of customer service in my institution?’ Improving customer service and patient satisfaction is a critical issue in administrative offices and hospital boardrooms across the United States.” This is how Thom A. Mayer, MD, FACHE, and Robert J. Cates, MD, begin the first chapter of their book Leadership for Great Customer Service: Satisfied Employees, Satisfied Patients, Second Edition.
In this entertaining yet practical guide for healthcare leaders seeking to transform their organizations’ approach to elevating and sustaining service excellence, the authors present a model for achieving customer service excellence in three parts: Framing the Customer Service Mandate, Survival Skills for Achieving Great Customer Service and The A-Team Tool Kit. The latter part, The A-Team Tool Kit, provides readers with a highly pragmatic set of tools to help them achieve service excellence. Learn more and order your copy today.
