Human Margin

Building a Culture Today’s Workforce Craves

Imagine the productivity of a thriving workforce where employees flourish so that they bring their best not only to patients but also to one another. With science-backed research, Katherine A. Meese and Quint Studer’s most recent work The Human Margin: Building the Foundations of Trust presents proven tactics to support staff and create high-performance environments.

Meese and Studer have uncovered what today’s healthcare workforce really wants and what’s at the heart of everything: trust in leadership. They reveal the 10 building blocks most closely linked to creating and sustaining that trust, and the authors explain the science behind the conditions that leaders must establish to build a successful workspace.

Plenty of attention is paid to the financial and operational margins, but Meese and Studer advocate for equal attention to diagnosing staff needs and creating a path to take human margin to the next level and beyond. As people reevaluate their lives and work, creating healthy environments where employees can thrive is more important than ever.

Robotic-Assisted Surgery Helps CEOs Address Key Challenges

For decades, robotic-assisted surgery has advanced minimally invasive surgery in terms of outcomes and access to care. Today, it is the only growing soft tissue modality in the U.S. and may soon surpass conventional approaches for many procedures. With data showing how RAS outperforms other modalities in many clinical metrics, hospital CEOs are looking to RAS solutions to help resolve some of their most pressing issues and deliver the quintuple aim.

A meta-analysis of peer-reviewed literature compared millions of RAS procedures to open and laparoscopic surgeries. It showed favorable outcomes for RAS, such as fewer conversions to open surgery, fewer 30-day complications and shorter hospital stays, which can help hospitals reduce costs and help patients recover faster, as evidenced in the study “Robotic versus laparoscopic versus open major hepatectomy – an analysis of costs and postoperative outcomes in a single-center setting” that appeared in the May 2023 issue of Langenbeck's Archives of Surgery.

By its nature, RAS also helps standardize procedures, providing increased surgeon autonomy and a digitally connected OR that enable hospitals to optimize efficiency and align staffing resources based on procedure complexity.

The most significant potential impact of RAS may be patient-centered growth as its adoption continues to accelerate and expand beyond traditional OR settings and schedules, making high-quality minimally invasive care more accessible to more patients while enabling hospitals to grow surgery volume and leverage fewer bed days.

With the continued market growth of RAS and its potential to help hospitals drive value, improve patient care, provide a better experience for care teams, and strengthen financial profiles, more hospitals may realize these clinical and economic benefits.
