Monthly Membership Perk:

Cultivating Thriving Workplaces in Healthcare

During National Nurses Week (May 6–12), which ends on Florence Nightingale's birthday, we recognize the indispensable contribution of nurses to the healthcare community. This same week, we also recognize the 5,000 hospitals, health systems, networks and others who provide care to their communities during National Hospital Week (May 7–13). “National Hospital Week is an opportunity to highlight our hospitals, health systems and health care workers and the innovative ways they are supporting and connected to their community,” according to the American Hospital Association.

As such, this week is an opportune time to focus on improving the healthcare environment so it is a place where employees and patients can thrive. Join “Leadership Insights: Cultivating Thriving Workplaces in Healthcare” to hear from an innovative panel of experts (and earn 1 Qualified Education credit) during a discussion about the unique challenges the healthcare workforce is facing. The panel will also address effective solutions for cultivating workplaces where safety, equity and well-being are at the forefront.

Now through June 7, you can access this recorded session free of charge from our recorded content library. Simply enter the discount code MAYPERK2023 when you register online. And, be sure to check out all of ACHE’s other on-demand digital learning offerings.

Untangling Healthcare’s Workforce Challenges

Career satisfaction, intention to leave jobs, and mental health and well-being issues among registered nurses have gotten significantly worse since the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to talent solutions company AMN Healthcare’s 2023 Survey of Registered Nurses. Based on the responses from more than 18,000 nurses in January, the survey found that career satisfaction dropped by 10 percentage points since the middle of the pandemic in 2021. In addition, the likelihood of encouraging others to become a nurse declined 14 points since 2021.

Faced with the fact that labor shortages and staff burnout are not abating, healthcare leaders are preparing for the long haul when it comes to addressing workforce challenges. In its latest cover story, Healthcare Executive recently asked four health system CEOs about their organizations’ responses to workforce issues.

One takeaway is a widespread focus on creative approaches. “We must keep innovating care delivery to meet the needs of our patients, given the workforce challenges,” says Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, CEO, Hackensack Meridian Health. “That’s how we will continue to create more pipelines and innovate care delivery.”

Visit HealthcareExecutive.org to learn about the creative solutions that Garrett and three other CEOs are employing to address today’s workforce challenges.
