Tomorrow, Nov. 29, Join in the Giving Movement

Please join our #GivingTuesday efforts tomorrow, Nov. 29, and make a tangible difference for the future of healthcare. On this special day, which represents a global generosity movement, consider donating to the Foundation of ACHE's Fund for Healthcare Leadership by visiting ache.org/GivingTuesday. Your contribution, no matter the size, supports our mission to develop the next generation of executives and leaders through scholarships and other vital resources, including the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity and Career Accelerator Programs, as well as the Executive Program. Donations to the Fund gave Dolan scholars like Megha Kachalia, FACHE, the opportunity to reflect on her professional development and receive mentorship and coaching, which you can read about in her recent post on the ACHE Blog.

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the United States), #GivingTuesday has inspired generosity around the world, resulting in greater donations and philanthropic activities that bring about real change in communities.

Tomorrow, join the giving movement and help strengthen the future of healthcare by donating to the Fund at ache.org/GivingTuesday. We also encourage you to share what motivates you to donate by using #MyGivingStory on social media.

New Frontiers of Health Services Management Explores Social Concerns in Healthcare

Of the 7,000 U.S. women diagnosed with HIV in 2018, Black women made up more than 4,000 cases, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data recently reported in USA Today. Despite this statistic, the CDC also reports that Black women are one of several populations that have the lowest percentage of HIV medical care, and that they face numerous barriers that contribute to disparities in diagnosis and treatment, including structural racism, stigma and discrimination.

As the second segment of a three-part series examining how healthcare organizations are addressing environmental, social and governance issues—including disparities in health and healthcare for people of color—the winter 2023 issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management considers the social component of this triad of concerns.

For example, Boston Medical Center Health System president/CEO Kate Walsh writes about the organization’s Health Equity Accelerator, a systemwide holistic approach to the root causes of health inequities among people of different races and ethnicities. In another piece, Emily Kryzer and Christopher M. Nolan, FACHE, leaders of BJC HealthCare’s community health improvement team, share their practical strategies and lessons learned in getting to the root causes of health inequity.

Denise Brooks-Williams, FACHE, senior vice president/CEO of market operations at Henry Ford Health System, describes the organization’s actions to tackle social and racial injustices in another story. Meanwhile, Janice G. Murphy, FACHE, president/CEO of Sisters of Charity Health System, describes her organization’s innovative reverse ride-along program in which community leaders lead a tour to show medical students what matters to local residents.

Finally, a case study by Christina R. Campos, FACHE, administrator of Guadalupe County Hospital in New Mexico, provides a rural perspective on social challenges to healthcare and tells how a novel private–public partnership helps the 10-bed hospital address the concerns.
