Leadership Spotlight: A Defining Moment for Leadership

The year 2020 has been unlike any other experienced by most leaders today. The pandemic has tested the skills, strength and resolve of CEOs, and, for many, has been a defining moment in their professional career. A feature story in the November/December 2020 issue of Healthcare Executive magazine delves into how CEOs are leading their organizations during this time. The article offers a snapshot of CEOs who have led with humility and turned to lessons learned from previous disasters they have faced. These lessons prepared them to lead with courage and calm through some of the most demanding circumstances the healthcare field has endured in recent memory. Lessons From COVID-19: How the Pandemic Is Bringing Positive Change to Healthcare

At Roche Diagnostics, we are grateful for the countless healthcare professionals who have been working tirelessly and placing themselves at risk in the fight against COVID-19. The pandemic has taken the world by storm, and one area where healthcare systems have sought help is emerging technologies—increasing the integration of telemedicine, telehealth, robotics and digital solutions to share data, augment stretched resources and limit human contact. While implementation efforts have brought new challenges, they have also yielded important learnings.

The power of the global community and transparent sharing of data. From the initial reporting of the novel COVID-19 virus to the global publication of the isolated virus genome sequence, there has been a remarkable open-access sharing of data and best practices. This transparency has facilitated the rapid development of detection and treatment methods and raises the question of whether this type of data sharing could help advance detection and treatment for other global health threats such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes.

The need to embrace new technologies and rapid change. While the healthcare system is sometimes criticized for its slow uptake of new technologies, the rapid deployment of innovative solutions in the fight against COVID-19 shows that healthcare systems can evolve quickly to fit changing needs. If the pandemic response has demonstrated anything in this area, it is that this agility can help save countless lives and improve patient care worldwide.

Data Model Shows How Predictive Analytics Can Help Manage COVID-19 Response

The digitization of healthcare has created a wealth of data that can be valuable to healthcare organizations. The volume of data created, however, presents a problem since humans are not efficient at uncovering obscure patterns in big data sets. That’s why artificial intelligence and machine learning are increasingly important in data analytics. During a free webinar this Thursday, Mike Harden, senior data scientist, Change Healthcare, will describe how predictive analytics can be leveraged to manage capacity in a crisis. Ronan Segrave, COO, Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, part of the multihospital health system Shared Health in Winnipeg, Manitoba, will discuss the impact a collaborative data model had on Shared Health’s COVID-19 response.

This webinar is made possible in part by the support of Change Healthcare, an ACHE Premier Corporate Partner. Register today.
