Spotlight:

Building a Future-Fit Executive Team

“The stakes are higher now,” for leaders recruiting executive teams, says Jennifer Tomasik, FACHE, vice president and principal with CFAR Inc., in a November/December Healthcare Executive feature. “It’s a very challenging environment,” agrees John Fernandez, president and CEO of Lifespan.

As they grapple with financial pressures, inflation, reimbursement, retention challenges and exhaustion, leaders of healthcare organizations also are realizing the recruiting environment has changed—and it’s no longer one-size-fits-all. Some health systems are focusing on reconfiguring and establishing their priorities and developing leaders internally, while others are looking for outside candidates that can hit the ground running and possess high emotional intelligence and a successful track record.

Regardless of the strategy, a clear, multiyear plan is needed to build bench strength over time. Find out how interviewed executives are tackling succession planning by reading the feature, as well as the rest of the November/December issue, at HealthcareExecutive.org.

Encourage Intergenerational Dialogue to Build Understanding

How do you feel other generations think of you? Explore why employee perceptions and needs across generations are critical to institutional success in this online only article on HealthcareExecutive.org/WebExtras. There are as many as five generations currently in the workforce, which provides hospitals and healthcare systems with the challenge and opportunity to build a sense of belonging that takes into account all age groups.

Executives interviewed for the article are working simultaneously to retain an aging workforce while recruiting the younger generations who think differently. This requires mutual respect, acceptance, communication and a desire to bring everyone together for cross-generational conversations.

Discover strategies for building common spaces conducive to listening and understanding in the feature, “Building Belonging Across Generations,” available at HealthcareExecutive.org.

Prioritizing People, Strategy and Processes Over Tech

Although technology plays a crucial role in digital transformation, it should be viewed as an enabler, not the sole focus. A rushed strategy is a crisis waiting to happen, writes Brian R. Spisak, PhD, in an ACHE Blog post. Spisak is an independent consultant and research associate at the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, Harvard, T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University, and he stresses that healthcare executives should strive to define a responsible strategy aligned with their organizational goals and then identify the tech that supports those objectives.

Read Spisak’s thoughts on how to become a computational leader who can use technology as a partner to enhance the analysis and interpretation of data, as well as check out other commentary from industry-leading thinkers on the ACHE Blog.
