New Book Explores Transition From Experienced Executive to Healthcare Consultant
“A career change may be motivated by a push or a pull scenario. While both may be present, it is useful to determine which of the two dominate. Under the push scenario, what is the source of dissatisfaction (or failure) with the current situation? … Under the pull scenario, it is important to understand the attraction to consulting as an option,” writes Scott A. Mason, DPA, FACHE, in the first chapter of his new book, Executive Turned Consultant: Transitioning from Experienced Executive to Trusted Advisor in Healthcare.
In his latest release, Mason, a seasoned thought leader in healthcare strategy, provides a road map for executives contemplating a move into management consulting. The book walks readers through key considerations and includes firsthand accounts of executives who have navigated the transition. Call for Proposals: Management Innovations Poster Session
We invite authors to submit narratives of their posters for consideration during the 38th Annual Management Innovations Poster Session, to be held at ACHE’s 2023 Congress on Healthcare Leadership, March 20–23. This is a unique opportunity for authors to share the innovative work being done at their organizations with other healthcare leaders. We are interested in innovations addressing issues that might be helpful to others, including improving quality or efficiency, improving patient or physician satisfaction, implementation of EHRs, uses of new technology and similar topics.
Please visit ache.org/CongressPosterSession for the full selection criteria. Narratives should be submitted as an email attachment to PosterSessions@ache.org by Jan. 17, 2023. A list of posters and narratives from this year is available here.

Recruiting and Retaining Top Talent
This is a challenging time for companies across the board, particularly in healthcare services. To help combat healthcare staffing shortages exacerbated by the pandemic, the Department of Health and Human Services recently awarded more than $266 million to train nurses, community workers and public health professionals. Despite this boost from the government, healthcare leaders must also prepare for the future in a variety of ways.
One of the most important measures they can take is to continue investing in their most valued resource: their employees, writes Lauren Ruane, co-head of healthcare, Middle Market Banking & Specialized Industries, J.P Morgan Commercial Banking. In her article “Recruiting and Retaining Top Talent,” Ruane outlines steps leaders can take to invest in training, skill expansion and mobility opportunity support. For example, a key differentiator of healthcare companies that successfully retain qualified talent is a commitment from leadership to foster an innovative workplace.
