ACHE Journals Offer Lessons in Advancing Patient Safety

“Everyone makes mistakes, so [high-reliability organizations] adopt processes that anticipate potential errors and provide resilience to catch and correct them before they cause harm,” wrote M. Michael Shabot, MD, founding partner, Relia Healthcare Advisors, in the July/August 2019 issue of ACHE’s Journal of Healthcare Management. This article on how to achieve zero patient harm in healthcare organizations and others published in the Journal and Frontiers of Health Services Management frequently cover safety topics such as the importance of adopting a high-reliability mindset and how to create a positive safety climate perception. To learn more about how to access ACHE’s journals for these safety articles and more, visit ache.org/Journals.

For additional ACHE resources on advancing patient safety, visit ache.org/Safety. There, you will find the recently released Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety, which provides health systems with renewed momentum and clear direction for eliminating preventable medical harm, and other invaluable tools.

CMS Expands Telehealth Services Eligible for Medicare Payment

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently announced it is expanding the list of telehealth services that Medicare Fee-for-Service will pay for during the COVID-19 pandemic. CMS also announced it is providing additional support to state Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program agencies in their efforts to expand access to telehealth.

Medicare will begin paying eligible practitioners who furnish 11 newly added telehealth services effective immediately and for the duration of the pandemic. The list of these newly added services is available on the List of Telehealth Services webpage.

Additionally, CMS released a new supplement to its State Medicaid & CHIP Telehealth Toolkit: Policy Considerations for States Expanding Use of Telehealth, COVID-19 Version, which provides approaches and tools states can use to communicate with providers on using telehealth for patient care. The updated supplemental information is intended to help states as they begin planning beyond the temporary flexibilities provided in response to the pandemic.
