D&I Resources for Today’s Healthcare Leaders
We make supporting diversity and inclusion integral to our mission and daily work. From specialized member forums to career resources, executive programs and policy statements, we offer a variety of diversity and inclusion resources to help close the leadership gap in healthcare management, and to improve the workforce and services delivered to patients and communities.
- The Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity and Career Development Programs offer specialized leadership development for diverse leaders to support them in advancing in their careers. Both programs include education and networking experiences.
- Member communities, forums and networks that invite ACHE members with affiliated interests to communicate, collaborate and advance together such as the Asian Healthcare Leaders Community and the LGBTQ Healthcare Leaders Community.
- The Executive Diversity Career Navigator is a website that offers information, tools and inspiration for diverse leaders with free access to most assets.
- ACHE conducts recurring studies on career attainment by gender and race and ethnicity to assess the effectiveness of organizational initiatives to increase racial/ethnic diversity and provide gender equity in the workplace.
These are just some of the diversity and inclusion resources available to our members. Visit the Diversity and Inclusion webpage to see the full breadth of our offerings. Thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.
Value-Based Care Strategies for Financial Resiliency
The pandemic exposed flaws in the healthcare system and created changes that could potentially accelerate fundamental shifts in how healthcare is delivered and funded. The path to financial resiliency, durability and longevity lies in diversifying into value-based reimbursement models. To help organizations on their value-based care journey, Dave Friederichs, senior director, Cerner Health Network, discusses key VBC strategies that can help health systems become more sustainable and financially resilient. On World Patient Safety Day, Share How You Lead for Safety
This Friday, the World Health Organization is recognizing World Patient Safety Day 2021—a day meant to enhance global understanding of patient safety, increase public engagement in healthcare safety and promote global action to prevent and reduce avoidable harm in healthcare. This year’s theme for the day is dedicated to the need to prioritize and address safety in maternal and newborn care, particularly around the time of childbirth, when most harm occurs.
At ACHE, we believe the most important thing healthcare leaders can stand for and lead for is safety. As such, we would like to take this opportunity to remind you of the many patient safety resources we offer on our new and improved safety site, ache.org/Safety:
- NEW—Because we’re serious about establishing a culture of safety at ACHE and within our broader healthcare community, we now offer a continually growing collection of safety-related thought leadership, curated with you in mind. Here are the most recent pieces we’ve published from our safety repertoire.
- Released one year ago by the National Steering Committee for Patient Safety, Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety provides health systems with renewed momentum and clearer direction for eliminating preventable medical harm.
- Commit to a few priorities at a time with Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success. This resource helps leaders break down priorities and focus on fine-tuning a few pillars of changes at a time.
- NEW—If you are using Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success and/or Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety in your organization, we want to hear from you. Please fill out the form available on the lower right-hand side of the pages for these resources to let us know your thoughts about the blueprint or the national action plan, and how your organization is using these resources.
- The We Lead for Safety Pledge invites healthcare leaders to join a community of executives who are committed to leading with intent and prevention of unnecessary harm.
- The safety leadership journey requires executives to continually assess their organization to learn what strategies are working and to periodically measure the pace and quality of their progress. Taking the Culture of Safety Organizational Self-Assessment is the first step toward implementing systematic change that will make an impact.
Exploring Well-Being Efforts During the Pandemic
“When contemplating well-being strategies, it is important to think about the eventual return on investment, not just the short-term return for a specific program,” write Kelly Hancock, DNP, and Chad V. Minor, FACHE, leaders of Cleveland Clinic’s Caregiver Office, in the fall issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management. This issue of the journal looks at how healthcare organizations stay resilient by ensuring the well-being of their staffs and communities. In their article, Hancock and Minor describe their well-being strategy during the pandemic and explain how their initiatives such as a well-being website are shaping the future at Cleveland Clinic.
In another feature, Jim Dunn, PhD, FACHE, executive vice president and chief people and culture officer at Atrium Health, draws from a strong corporate culture to anticipate the needs of teammates during a crisis. Employee well-being and experience are essential to the care that everyone at Atrium Health provides, he writes.
Meanwhile, Texas Health Resources CEO Barclay E. Berdan, FACHE, tells how Texas Health puts its people in the best position to safely manage the health of their patients based on lessons learned from a public health crisis in 2014.
Read these features and more in the fall issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management, which is available online at ache.org/Journals.
