Robotic Fleet Expansion Yields Strong ROI

With significant input from surgeons, USMD Hospital at Arlington (Texas) invested in expanding its robotic fleet with two new systems, including a single port robotic system.

The patient-centered, physician-led hospital is an advanced surgical hospital dedicated to combining attentive service with ahead-of-the-curve technologies. Since the hospital’s founding in 2003, robotic-assisted surgery has been central to that mission. Five of USMD Arlington's eight ORs have robotic systems, with over 20,000 procedures performed to date.

The organization’s decision to add two new systems—including one for single port surgery—has yielded a measurable return on investment in less than a year.

“At USMD Hospital at Arlington, our commitment to delivering the best and latest surgical care in a personalized care environment starts with listening to our physicians,” says Jackie McDaniel, vice president of business development. “Their insights help guide our decision making, helping us invest in technologies that not only elevate patient outcomes but also deliver measurable ROI.”

The new robotic systems have already made a significant impact through:

  • Shorter lengths of stay: In 85% of prostatectomy cases, patients undergoing single port surgery were discharged the same day as the procedure.
  • Increased volume: General surgery volume increased 54% over the same quarter in 2024. Urology case volume increased 8%, since switching many urology cases to the new single port system freed other systems for more cases.
  • New doctor recruitment: Physician-owned USMD Arlington gives surgeons the technologies they need, including the two new robotic systems, which aids recruitment efforts. The hospital recently added eight new surgeons in eight months.

Leaders at USMD Arlington have learned a great deal about continual professional growth in their 22-year journey. Asked for their tips, they pointed to using Intuitive’s staff training, physician education and financial guidance, as well as the hospital’s internal efforts to drive physician engagement and optimize the patient experience.

Effective Leadership Requires a Robust Foundation

Pierre Monice, FACHE, president/CEO of Holy Cross Health—Trinity Health, has taken an unconventional path to his current role, from high school teacher to church pastor and then the Leadership Development Residency Fellowship Program at Advent Health. Although his father was a physician, Monice said, “I never really saw myself in healthcare. Even to this day, I can’t stand blood or needles. So, it’s kind of ironic that I work in a healthcare system.”

Monice joined Baljeet Sangha, FACHE, CEO, Pain & Rehabilitative Consultants Medical Group, on a recent episode of the Healthcare Executive podcast to discuss navigating career advancement in an evolving landscape. Sangha points out that “there’s a lot of power in…just being open and thoughtful in your authentic self.”

The healthcare profession requires openness to learning and listening, Monice says, and the ability to coach, inspire and motivate. Monice and Sangha agree that embracing self-doubt can become a “superpower,” allowing leaders to stay challenged and inquisitive, and examine the importance of diverse teams. “Take it from someone who's literally worked in three different industries or careers prior to healthcare,” Monice says. “We all have life experiences that really can move the needle. Healthcare is a people business. Our communities become stronger when we have representation around the table and when we're able to be vulnerable and push to see results.”
