Redeem Points Earned for Sharing the Value of ACHE
As the year ends, be sure to redeem points earned through the Leader-to-Leader Rewards Program before they expire on Dec. 31. If you referred colleagues to become members this year, you not only helped to build a more diverse and inclusive ACHE community, you also earned points for Leader-to-Leader Rewards.
To earn points, list your name as the referral on a new member application or on an FACHE® application. Once the membership is activated or all Fellow requirements have been met, you will receive points to redeem for rewards such as an ACHE-branded travel mug, a customizable coaster set or a computer briefcase. Points expire the year after they are earned on Dec. 31.
Please note Leader-to-Leader points cannot be earned by referring a member suspended in 2019. If you have any questions, please contact the Customer Service Center at (312) 424-9400 or email contact@ache.org.
Program Spotlight: Head West This Winter for Face-to-Face Education
Strengthen your knowledge in the areas of operations and leadership while earning up to 24 ACHE Face-to-Face Education credits at the Beaver Creek Cluster, Jan. 6–9.
Discover how to promote respectful engagement and uphold The Joint Commission standards to address disruptive, toxic behaviors in the work place when you attend “Toxic Behaviors in Healthcare: How Everyday Civility Increases Patient Safety and Team Performance.” Under the guidance of expert faculty Mitchell E. Kusy, PhD, attendees will explore large-scale techniques that can translate into their performance management system and assessment tools to identify and counsel those who enable bad behavior of others to continue.
To lead successfully in an increasingly pay-for-value environment, healthcare executives must be able to convert quality metrics into financial metrics. During “Integrating Quality and Cost in a Pay-for-Value Era,” attendees will explore this core competency under the direction of expert faculty members Jon Burroughs, MD, FACHE, and Richard J. Priore, ScD, FACHE, both of whom have extensive healthcare financial experience. Discover the interrelationship between clinical and financial outcomes, discuss why converting quality metrics into financial metrics is a required core skill, and calculate ROI of quality projects and pay-for-quality payment methodologies.

Thank You for Supporting the Future of Healthcare Leadership
As 2019 nears its close, we would like to reflect on the impact of contributions made to the Fund for Healthcare Leadership. In the fall 2019 Fund Leadership Report, Heather D. Thompson, RN, FACHE, CENP, senior director of nursing, St. Luke’s Hospital, Chesterfield, Mo., describes receiving a scholarship to participate in the 2018 Executive Program as a “highlight in my career.”
It is only through generous donations to the Fund for Healthcare Leadership that ACHE can fully fund scholarships for healthcare leaders like Thompson. ACHE is grateful to Fund contributors for supporting the future of healthcare management excellence and increasing the diversity of healthcare leadership.

Your December Gift: Workforce Burnout and Well-Being
Even the most well-run healthcare organization will have difficulty achieving its mission if it cannot maintain an engaged, fulfilled and healthy workforce. In our December gift, you will find two journal articles on the timely topics of workforce burnout and well-being.
In “Physician and Nurse Well-Being: Seven Things Hospital Boards Should Know,” from the November/December 2018 issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management, the authors present a set of basic truths to guide organizations as they seek to recognize, understand and address burnout issues among their workers.
A different perspective on burnout is presented in a second article, “The Science of Motivation Applied to Clinician Burnout: Lessons for Healthcare,” from the winter 2018 issue of Frontiers of Health Services Management. Author Jameson K. Norton, FACHE, approaches the topic with an emphasis on three proven drivers of intrinsic motivation—autonomy, mastery and purpose—which have the potential to bring out the best in our care teams even in the most challenging of circumstances.
You can access your December gift here.
