Monthly Membership Perk:

Mentorship: Today’s Investment in Tomorrow’s Leaders

First-timers to formal leadership positions, those of the freshly minted promotion, are often not equipped for the transition; however, with appropriate development and support, everyone—managers, their teams, the broader organization, and (looking down the road), the human resources pipeline—can succeed.

In this chapter from Mentor, Coach, Lead to Peak Professional Performance, author Laurie K. Baedke, FACHE, writes that as the remaining baby boomers are close to retirement, it is an absolute must that ready and capable successors are prepared to take over for them. Formalized leadership or mentoring should also be in place, as this feature has been noted as lacking in large bodies of research literature. “Formalized mentoring” largely refers to officially supporting and sanctioning leadership development and mentor-mentee relationships.

A paragraph from the chapter sums the topic up best: “Smart leaders and organizations make substantial investments (time, talent, treasure) toward helping associates better know themselves so they can rise to their unique exceptionalism. Then, these leaders double down to facilitate those authentic connections and access to allies, which further aid the maximization of employees’ distinctive strengths.”

We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.

Dolan Executive Diversity and Career Accelerator Programs: Application Period Open

The Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program and Thomas C. Dolan Career Accelerator Program application period is now open through April 10. Both the Dolan Executive Diversity and Career Accelerator programs provide education, mentoring and networking experiences to prepare diverse leaders for higher-level positions in hospitals, health systems and other healthcare organizations.

In 2023, the Executive Diversity Program will consist of three in-person sessions and e-learning, including live and recorded webinars and self-study materials. The Career Accelerator Program will be exclusively virtual this year, consisting of 14 virtual live sessions. Dolan scholars are empowered through a structured curriculum and activities that cultivate strong leadership presence; sharpen expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion; build critical leadership skills; and expand one’s capacity to navigate career opportunities and challenges. Both programs are six months in duration.

The Dolan Executive Diversity Program has offered specialized leadership development for diverse leaders since it was established in 2014 by the Foundation of ACHE’s Fund for Healthcare Leadership to honor Thomas C. Dolan, who served as president and CEO of ACHE from 1991 to 2013. The program honors his long-standing service to the profession of healthcare leadership and furthers his strong commitment to achieving greater diversity among senior healthcare leaders. In 2021, the program was expanded with the addition of the Career Accelerator Program, designed for diverse mid-careerists to support their career advancement.
