Leading the Workforce of the Future
As we begin a new year, healthcare leaders are under pressure to provide beleaguered front-line workers with the extra protection and pay they are demanding as they continue to battle COVID-19, according to recent news reports. This challenge, along with rising costs, lower revenue owing to patients delaying care and growing provider shortages, has forced some hospital and health system executives to develop creative staffing approaches to leverage current skills and provide much-needed support to promote the health and safety of their employees.
For a limited time only, you can learn how top healthcare leaders are navigating these challenges in “Leadership Insights: The Healthcare Workforce of the Future.” You’ll hear from presenters Ghazala Sharieff, MD, FACHE, senior vice president/CMO, Clinical Excellence and Experience, Scripps Health; David L. Schreiner, FACHE, president/CEO, Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital; and Kevin B. Mahoney DBA, CEO, University of Pennsylvania Health System, as they share approaches for preventing workforce burnout and predictions for what will be the biggest changes in the healthcare workforce of tomorrow.
Between Jan. 10 and Feb. 11, you can access this seminar in our recorded content library free of charge. Simply enter the discount code JANPERK2022 when you register for this session online. And, be sure to check out all of ACHE’s other on-demand digital learning offerings. We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.
Explore Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Congress and the Leadership Symposium
Supporting diversity, equity and inclusion is integral to our mission and daily work. As such, attendees will find a wide array of seminars and events that address these topics at the 2022 Congress on Healthcare Leadership and Virtual Leadership Symposium. Congress highlights include the following.
- Join Odette C. Bolano, FACHE, president/CEO, Saint Alphonsus Health System, for the Thomas C. Dolan Diversity Address: Strengthening Health Equity From the Boardroom to the Community to hear her share experiences from her journey leading through a lens of health equity.
- During Masters of Health Equity, Nicholas Tejeda, FACHE, group CEO, the Hospitals of Providence, and Janice E. Nevin, MD, CEO, ChristianaCare, will discuss concrete strategies for addressing systemic inequities in healthcare.
- The “Better Together” Joint Diversity and Inclusion Reception offers the ideal setting to kick off Congress and to join others who share a commitment to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in healthcare leadership.

- Congress participants can choose from several Leadership Insights sessions, each of which address different facets of DEI:
Those who attend the Virtual Leadership Symposium will have a variety of choices, too.
- Join David R. Williams, PhD, chair, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Harvard University, for an eye-opening presentation during Hot Topic: An Evidence-Based Approach to Addressing Healthcare’s Inequities. Williams, who developed a scale to measure the impact of discrimination on well-being, will present evidence for how racism is producing a rigged system.
- Choose from the following Leadership Insights sessions, each of which explore different angles of diversity, equity and inclusion: Leadership Insights: Leveraging Data to Address Social Determinants of Health and Leadership Insights: Driving Equity From the Inside Out—Meeting Workforce Needs.
Visit ache.org/Congress to explore all of this year’s offerings, and be sure to register by March 7 for early bird registration prices. Congress registrants who are interested in attending the Virtual Leadership Symposium, April 11–12, can register for that event with a discount of more than 50% off the regular fee by adding it to their in-person Congress registration.

Journal of Healthcare Management Examines Workforce Issues, New Research
The pandemic remains far from over, and there are consequences if we do not aggressively pursue solutions now to engage our healthcare workers, warns Charles D. Stokes, FACHE, in a feature article in the January/February Journal of Healthcare Management. Stokes, who is executive in residence at the University of Alabama Birmingham, former president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, and a Past Chair of ACHE, shares tactics to sustain a resilient workforce in this article titled “Engagement Is Essential for Sustainable Healthcare.”
In this issue’s interview, Ajith Pai, PharmD, FACHE, explains how his background prepared him for his position as president of Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Cleburne.
Also included in this issue is an article from researchers at Yale University, Yale New Haven Health and Emory University that demonstrates how a clinical redesign program creates greater uniformity across related procedures and yields significant cost savings.
Additionally, a new study that looks at the post-discharge use of pharmacists finds that integrating pharmacists into the continuum of care seems to be an effective strategy from both outcome and cost control perspectives.
