Monthly Membership Perk:

Proactive Patient Safety in Today’s Environment

Over the past two years, healthcare systems have been stretched in ways unthinkable in recent memory. Many of the changes have resulted in reactive approaches to operations and patient safety. However, as the world and our field adjust to living with the shifts brought on by the pandemic, a transition to a more proactive approach to quality improvement and patient safety is needed.

For a limited time only, the webinar “Quality Improvement in the Modern Era: Moving from Reactive to Proactive Patient Safety” can be accessed for free from our recorded content library. You’ll hear from quality and patient safety thought leaders Richard G. Greenhill, DHA, FACHE, assistant program director, Graduate Certificates, and assistant professor, Department of Healthcare Management and Leadership, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center; Stephen Powell, DHA, CEO, Synensys; and Daniel O. Wyman, MD, CMO, Synensys, as they discuss applicable approaches to medical safety learned from aviation threat and error management, and more.

Between March 14 and April 13, this webinar is free of charge. Simply enter the discount code MARCHPERK2022 when you register online. And, be sure to check out all of ACHE’s other on-demand digital learning offerings. We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.

Welcome to Patient Safety Awareness Week

Although progress has been made in patient safety over the past two decades, the World Health Organization estimates 134 million adverse events still occur each year due to unsafe care in hospitals in low- and middle-income countries, resulting in some 2.6 million deaths, according to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Improving healthcare safety requires leaders who are committed to achieving the highest standards of safety, and ACHE is dedicated to amplifying the importance of safety and serving as a catalyst for the field of healthcare management.

In recognition of Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 13–19—a dedicated time and platform sponsored by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement for growing awareness about patient safety and recognizing the work already being done—ACHE encourages everyone in healthcare to become familiar with or revisit the following resources:

  • Safer Together: A National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety: This resource draws from evidence-based practices, widely known and effective interventions, exemplar case examples and newer inventions. The plan is the work of 27 federal agencies, safety organizations, experts, and patient and family advocates, including ACHE.
  • Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success: This resource helps leaders break down priorities and focus on fine-tuning a few pillars of change at a time. ACHE and the IHI Lucian Leape Institute collaborated with leaders of progressive healthcare organizations and globally renowned experts in leadership, safety and culture to develop this resource.
  • Healthcare leaders can commit to leading for safety by signing our We Lead for Safety pledge and assessing their organization’s safety culture through this self-assessment.

These resources and tools are available on ache.org/Safety, where you will find additional information and thought leadership on advancing patient safety and moving toward zero harm.
