How Effective Communication Builds Trust
Cultivating a unique leadership voice requires being comfortable and curious, which activates a problem-solving mindset, according to Penny Johnson, president/CEO, Texas Health Huguley Hospital Fort Worth South, and Fayola Edwards-Ojeba, MD, founder/CEO, RechargedMD, who discuss the power of both talking and listening in the Healthcare Executive Podcast episode, “How to Find and Cultivate Your Unique Leadership Voice.”
“You can’t communicate enough,” says Johnson. “Even when you don’t think something needs to be communicated, it probably does. … Because the more you share the direction of where your system’s going, or your hospital, or your region, the more you’re going to get your team behind it.”
Teams don’t expect perfection, but they do appreciate honesty, she stresses. It’s important to act with intent in a communication plan, rather than reacting to events, and actively listen—“picking those choice moments and opportunities to be impactful.”
Listen to Johnson and Edwards-Ojeba chat about the benefits of disagreement, how to resolve conflict and build trust, and the importance of taking responsibility for how you present yourself. Subscribe to the Healthcare Executive Podcast to ensure you don’t miss an episode.
Unlocking Healthcare Innovation: Building Entrepreneurial Mindsets
In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, innovation is no longer optional—it’s essential. Fostering an entrepreneurial mindset within established healthcare organizations can be the key to unlocking new possibilities in patient care and operational efficiency, a subject that will be explored in the Nov. 6 webinar, “Building Entrepreneurial Mindsets in Healthcare: Transforming Care Through Innovation.”
Traditional hierarchical structures often hinder rapid innovation and adaptability. However, by adopting an entrepreneurial mindset—characterized by creativity, risk-taking and proactiveness—healthcare organizations can overcome these barriers and thrive in a dynamic environment.
An entrepreneurial mindset encourages continuous improvement and innovation, vital for driving meaningful change in hospitals. By embracing new technologies like telehealth and AI and by implementing agile frameworks, healthcare teams can stay responsive to change. Lean Startup principles, focusing on experimentation and learning, help minimize risks while maximizing outcomes. Design Thinking, with its patient-centered approach, further enhances creative problem-solving in healthcare.
Leaders play a crucial role in promoting this mindset by setting a vision, being role models and empowering employees to think creatively. As we prepare for future trends like personalized medicine and predictive analytics, adopting an entrepreneurial mindset will be key to ensuring that healthcare organizations continue to deliver the highest quality of care.
