Strengthen Your Safety Initiatives on World Patient Safety Day

This Saturday is World Patient Safety Day, a global public health day established by the World Health Organization to increase public awareness and engagement to enhance patient safety and reduce patient harm.

At the American College of Healthcare Executives, we believe the most important thing healthcare leaders can stand and lead for is safety. As such, we are offering the session recording “Remote Video Auditing Is a Powerful Tool for Patient and Clinician Safety Culture and Operational Efficiencies” free of charge for a limited time only. Remote video auditing first emerged as a response to poor hand hygiene rates. Today, it is used in hospital systems nationwide for numerous patient and clinician safety initiatives, including in the OR. Worth 1 ACHE Qualified Education credit, this session recording features strategies to strengthen your patient-safety initiatives. Additionally, experts from Northwell Health LIJ Medical Center and North American Partners in Anesthesia discuss the remarkable results they saw after implementing remote video auditing technology in dozens of ORs.

This session recording is available free of charge through Oct. 12; simply enter the discount code SEPTPERK2022 when you register online. And, be sure to check out all of ACHE’s other on-demand digital learning offerings.

Also, remember that ACHE offers many patient safety resources at ache.org/Safety, including:

And, be sure to check out a recent ACHE Blog post by M. Michael Shabot, MD, founding partner, Relia Healthcare Advisors, which explores how the healthcare field may have a thing or two to learn from the airline industry when it comes to safety.

We hope you enjoy this Monthly Membership Perk and the patient safety resources that are always available to you, and we thank you for being a part of the ACHE community.

Optimizing Organizations’ Digital Front Door for Healthcare Consumers

At the center of every healthcare journey is the consumer, the patient, the person in need of answers. The consumer relies on those working in healthcare to provide them with a personalized experience through the use of digital services that make the process of participating in their care easier. From self-scheduling to information about health plan coverage and financial clearance, consumers expect to have a modernized experience.

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, consumers were asking providers for more autonomy and convenience with their healthcare. Now, with the rise of retail brands entering the provider space, consumers have a myriad of options in choosing who, when and where they fulfill their healthcare needs.

Digital healthcare tools are proving to be a key to helping organizations enhance customer service, collaboration and engagement between consumers and providers and in reducing costs for both providers and patients.

“It's not just about getting a provider; it’s about staying connected. You have to manage the health journey and show that the real importance is a focus on health. Consumers will expect it and healthcare providers need to provide that,” says Sue Martin, vice president, financial alignment, Oracle Cerner.

Listen to this podcast to hear Martin and Rick Gundling, senior vice president, professional practice, Healthcare Financial Management Association, discuss the impacts COVID-19 has made on consumerism, and strategies organizations can leverage to empower and support patients.

New Issue of Frontiers Focuses on Environmental Initiatives

“Focus on environmental, social and governance, or ESG, issues has become more prevalent in recent years, driven largely by climate change, calls for social justice reform and inequities exposed by the pandemic,” writes ACHE President/CEO Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, in a recent “Perspectives” column.

ACHE journal Frontiers of Health Services Management reflects this renewed focus on these topics with a three-part series on emerging environmental, social and governance issues in healthcare, beginning with environmental initiatives in the fall 2022 issue.

In a feature article, Kathy Gerwig, a climate and health adviser formerly with Kaiser Permanente, explores the complicated relationship between healthcare and climate change. She is also presenting a hot topic session “Sustainable Health Systems of the Future” at ACHE’s Virtual Leadership Symposium that will be held Oct. 10-11.

Meanwhile, Jonathan J. Flannery, FACHE, senior associate director, advocacy, for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering, makes the case for sound environmental practices in another story.

Next, discover how Ascension executed an effective sustainable strategy in this article by Craig Cordola, FACHE, executive vice president/COO. Finally, explore a case study by Carol A. Gomes, FACHE, CEO/COO, Stony Brook University Hospital, that illustrates how the organization made its commitment to environmental sustainability.
