News Spotlight:

Leveraging Your Workforce Amid Staffing Shortages

Healthcare staffing shortages were already a challenge for hospitals and health systems, and the pandemic has only worsened the situation. With the recent surge of COVID-19 hospitalizations nationwide due to the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, the shortage of hospital employees, especially registered nurses, has become critical—endangering patients and forcing some hospitals to limit their number of beds.

Since the onset of the public health crisis, news reports indicate that many nurses are opting to retire early or shift to less stressful positions or more lucrative opportunities, such as travel nursing, for which the pay rate has skyrocketed during the pandemic. Still, others are departing due to recent COVID-19 vaccine mandates.

To help stanch the exodus of their nursing staff during the pandemic, some leaders have had to get creative. Interviews with C-suite leaders in a Healthcare Executive feature story reveal a number of innovative recruitment and retention approaches being tested—both before and during the public health crisis—to help prevent and address shortages.
