Monthly Membership Perk: Building Foundations of Trust
Authors Katherine A. Meese and Quint Studer have uncovered what today’s healthcare workforce really wants and what’s at the heart of everything: trust in leadership. Meese and Studer reveal the 10 building blocks most closely linked to creating and sustaining that trust in their book The Human Margin: Building the Foundations of Trust. Meese and Studer explore each of those building blocks, explaining the science behind the critical conditions that leaders must establish to build and retain trust.
In Chapter 5 of The Human Margin, Meese and Studer investigate the concept of belonging. They found if people are excluded from a work environment, it can be difficult to trust the people who surround them. As well, not belonging and loneliness can have a profound effect on physical and mental health and inversely, can even be an intrinsic motivator to succeed and work towards a common goal more fluidly.

Adapting a Human-Centered Leadership Approach
Myriad forces are shaping a new dynamic in the healthcare workplace, and organizations and their leadership must adopt a human-centered approach. In Cracking the Healthcare Leadership Code: How Purpose, Humility, and Accessibility Can Transform Your Organization, author Kevin Joseph, MD, FACHE, says it is imperative for leaders to adapt to the changing needs of their teams and rapidly evolve their leadership philosophy and style to thrive in this new work environment.
The book describes how to attract and retain talent by reducing hierarchical communication, reinvigorating workers’ sense of purpose, and empowering them to do their best work. From there, Dr. Joseph believes the metrics related to achievement of organizational goals will naturally start improving.
Throughout the book, Joseph shares one of his guiding principles as a healthcare executive: Break down the power gradient and put people first, which can shift the culture and result in improved patient outcomes and metrics.
