Diana L. Smalley, FACHE Chairman

Diana L. Smalley, FACHE, is regional president of Mercy in Oklahoma.
She also serves as Chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. With comprehensive programs in credentialing, education, career counseling, publications and research, ACHE works toward its goal of being the premier professional society for healthcare executives dedicated to improving healthcare delivery.
Board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow, Ms. Smalley served as an ACHE Governor from 2009 to 2012. She was the Regent for Nebraska from 2002 through 2006. She has also served on numerous ACHE committees.
Ms. Smalley has served as regional president of Mercy in Oklahoma since 2007. Prior to that, she served Avantas LLC, Omaha, Neb., as president from 2005 to 2007. At Alegent Health, Omaha, Neb., her roles included senior executive from 2003 to 2005, vice president for operations from 1999 to 2003 and COO from 1997 to 1999.
She also served Avantas LLC as co-founder/managing representative from 1999 to 2004. Her previous roles included Midlands Community Hospital, Papillion, Neb., as CEO from 1995 to 1997, COO from 1983 to 1995 and director of nursing from 1979 to 1983, and Springfield (Ill.) Community Hospital as its director of professional relations from 1976 to 1979.
In addition to her service to ACHE, Ms. Smalley has been a member of the board of directors of Memorial Community Hospital, the Nebraska Stroke Foundation and the Nebraska Board of Ambulance Advisors, serving as its chair. She is currently on the board of directors for the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Greater Oklahoma City.
Ms. Smalley received her master’s degree in public health from the University of Minnesota and her bachelor’s degree from Midland Lutheran College.

Christine M. Candio, RN, FACHE, is chief executive officer, Inova Alexandria (Va.) Hospital, and senior vice president, Inova Health System in Falls Church, Va.
She also serves as Chairman-Elect of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. With comprehensive programs in credentialing, education, career counseling, publications and research, ACHE works toward its goal of being the premier professional society for healthcare executives dedicated to improving healthcare delivery.
Board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow, Ms. Candio served as president of ACHE of Massachusetts, an ACHE chapter, from 2004 to 2007. She has also served on numerous ACHE committees.
Ms. Candio has been CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital, and senior vice president, Inova Health System, since 2008. Prior to her current position, she served as executive vice president of Hallmark Health System Inc.’s Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Melrose, Mass., from 2003 to 2008; vice president, patient services and women’s and children’s services, from 2002 to 2003; and system director, women’s and children’s services, from 1999 to 2002.
Prior to that, Ms. Candio served as administrative director, women’s and children’s services, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, N.J., from 1991 to 1999 and as nurse manager of ambulatory services from 1987 to 1991. She served as director of clinical services at Hospital Home Health Care of New Jersey in Edison from 1985 to 1987. Prior to that, she served as an obstetrical staff nurse at Riverside General Hospital, Secaucus, N.J., from 1984 to 1985 and as a staff nurse at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, N.J., from 1983 to 1984.
In addition to her service to ACHE, Candio serves on the boards of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, the Technical and Adult Program Advisory Board for the Alexandria School System, the American Hospital Association Section for Metropolitan Hospitals governing council, and the Georgetown University College of Health and Human Services Advisory Board. She is also a member of the Alexandria City Rotary and the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association Federal Advocacy Council, and she is an adjunct faculty member of the Georgetown University Graduate Mentorship Program.
Ms. Candio received her master’s degree in public administration, with a focus in healthcare management, from Fairleigh Dickinson University and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from William Patterson College of New Jersey.

Gayle L. Capozzalo, FACHE, is executive vice president, strategy and system development, at Yale New Haven Health System in New Haven, Conn.
She also serves as Immediate Past Chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. With comprehensive programs in credentialing, education, career counseling, publications and research, ACHE works toward its goal of being the premier professional society for healthcare executives dedicated to improving healthcare delivery.
Board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow, Ms. Capozzalo served as an ACHE Governor from 2007 to 2010. She was the ACHE Regent for Connecticut from 2004 to 2007. She served as president of the CT Association of Healthcare Executives, an ACHE chapter, from 2006 to 2007. She has also served on numerous ACHE committees.
Ms. Capozzalo was named executive vice president at Yale New Haven Health System in 1997. Prior to joining Yale New Haven Health System, Ms. Capozzalo was senior vice president of organizational development for the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate World Health Care System in Houston from 1993 to 1997. She also served SSM Health Care System in St. Louis as senior vice president from 1986 to 1993 and as corporate director of planning/marketing from 1982 to 1986. Her previous roles include business development at Saint Louis (Mo.) University Hospital and Clinics, teaching and consulting.
In addition to her service to ACHE, Ms. Capozzalo is immediate past chair of the board of directors of the Voluntary Hospitals of America Northeast and serves on the executive committee of the newly formed Voluntary Hospitals of America New England. She also serves on the boards of Connecticut Public Television, the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Greenwich Health Care Services, Bridgeport Hospital and Healthcare Services, and the Alumni Board of the University of Missouri–Columbia.
Ms. Capozzalo serves as a faculty member at Yale University’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. She serves as a preceptor at the University of Missouri–Columbia Department of Health Services Management and as an adjunct faculty member at St. Louis University’s Center for Health Services Education and Research.
She received her master’s degree in public health from the University of Missouri–Columbia and her bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the University of Maryland.

Deborah J. Bowen, FACHE, CAE, is president and CEO of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an international professional society of more than 40,000 healthcare executives who lead hospitals, healthcare systems and other healthcare organizations. With comprehensive programs in credentialing, education, career counseling, publications and research, ACHE works toward its goal of being the premier professional society for healthcare executives dedicated to improving healthcare delivery.
Before her appointment as president and CEO, Ms. Bowen served as ACHE’s executive vice president and COO since 2003. She served as vice president of administration at ACHE from 1994 to 2000 and as director of government relations from 1992 to 1994.
Outside her service to ACHE, from 2000 to 2003 Ms. Bowen served as deputy executive director at the Society of Actuaries in Schaumburg, Ill. She served as director of the division of communications from 1987 to 1992 and deputy director in the division of public affairs from 1986 to 1987 at the State Medical Society of Wisconsin in Madison. Her nonprofit healthcare experience also includes posts at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services, Bureau of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services.
Ms. Bowen has held several leadership positions including chairing the boards of the Association Forum of Chicagoland and the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education. She currently serves on the board of the Institute for Diversity in Health Management.
Ms. Bowen is board certified in healthcare management and a Fellow of both ACHE and the American Society of Association Executives. She is also a Baldrige Executive Fellow and a Certified Association Executive.
Ms. Bowen received a master’s degree in business administration from Loyola University Chicago and a master’s degree in science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Illinois State University, Normal, and completed the Executive Program in Healthcare Management at the Ohio State University.
